Kristin Farr Unveils Spring Magic Hecksagons

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about these pieces…
Kristin Farr: This is a painting from my ongoing Magic Hecksagon series of paintings. The colors remind me of pastel office paper and rainy spring days, which are currently rare in California. In the middle is a 9-pointed star, which is called an enneagram in geometry.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme that you had?
Kristin Farr: The Hecksagons have been my main jam for a few years, and I have shown them in a few galleries and painted them on some walls. I always work in multiples with my paintings and make hundreds of variations of the same idea.

1xRun: Tell us little bit about where the inspiration comes from for the Hecksagons.
Kristin Farr: I make a few other types of paintings and objects, but these have been my main jam for a while. They are inspired by “Hex Signs,” a form of folk art painted on barns for decoration, good fortune or protection, depending on which story you believe. I’m interested in human-made objects that are believed to hold magical powers, like dream catchers and other types of folk art.

1xRun: Tell us a bit about your process.
Kristin Farr: I buff the wood piece, draw the lines with a ruler and pencil and then start coloring with my paintbrush. I never use tape for the lines. I just keep practicing my steady hand. Sometimes I choose the colors ahead of time, which I did for this “Spring” piece. I’m often trying to create some kind of rainbow or abstracted gradient of color. Other times I just choose the colors intuitively as I go. There are infinite color and design combinations to work with, and the process is always exciting because they’re always a surprise in the end. You can never tell how they’re going to feel until they’re finished.

1xRun: What do you feel is unique about this piece?
Kristin Farr: I usually work with a super bright, neon color palette, and I finally achieved a goal of using much more neutral tones to make a painting that still felt right to me.

1xRun: Why do you think people should buy this print?
Kristin Farr: It will definitely bring good luck and chill vibes to anyone who acquires it. It’s also practically life size! I’m very impressed with how the kind folks at 1xRUN made a print on paper that looks as close to the original painting as possible.

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Kristin Farr: FEELS!
