Mary Williams Talks Inspiration And Upcoming Show With Red Bull House Of Art

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this series of work?
Mary Williams: I was already on a mission to do some Disney/princess themed work, when Inner State Gallery asked me to be a part of the Glass, Cinder, and Thorns III show. Online I had seen some photographs an artist had taken of women dressed like Disney princesses who were taken out of movie context and put into real world situations. I thought my drawing and collage work would suit this theme, and I could put a lot of my feminist thoughts and inklings into them.

1xRUN: Tell us a little about your process and how the execution came about for this series.
Mary Williams: I actually found a princess coloring book where you could put your own drawings onto the page, which was really helpful in taking them out of their Disneyland environments and putting them into situations that I thought up. The backgrounds were great fun to make, and I made use of scratch board, paint on glass, and 3D elements. The end results were detailed and delicate imagery conveying powerful, women-centric realities.

1xRun: What have you been up to since your last release with us. Any big events or shows coming up?
Mary Williams: Currently I am in cycle 11 of the Red Bull House of Art in Detroit, which I am thrilled about! I am working with all my favorite subjects, including women’s issues, current events, and taking jabs at pop culture. And of course there will be lots of cats and other animal friends. The residency culminates in a show which will be in October. I will have an eclectic mix of work, and I have been stretching out of my comfort zone so it will be a great exhibit!
