1x: Tell us a little bit about this piece. Is there anything immediate you would like to highlight?
Brandon Boyd: This piece, like a handful of new paintings, was born of a conversation that evolved into a photograph that evolved into a painting. The subject, though deeply suggestive in her body language actually possesses a heart of gold. Hence the title.

1x: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had?
Brandon Boyd: Yeah, it came along with a large handful of other paintings I did over the past couple of months after being home from tour. I wanted to simplify my approach and engage some friends in conversation, then paint them along the way. So I guess the theme would be something along the lines of “Conversations with Beautiful Women…”

1x: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Brandon Boyd: All of them are watercolor and ink on paper. But Heart of Gold has a splash of acrylic.

1x: When was the piece created and how long did it take to complete?
Brandon Boyd: I painted it about two months ago over the span of only a few hours, but they were highly enjoyable hours and I wouldn’t have minded it taking a week.

1x: What do you feel is unique about this piece?
Brandon Boyd: Oh jeez, I don’t know. Maybe nothing. Or perhaps many things! That’s the fun part; the participants get the chance to decide for themselves. Either way, I like how it turned out and I’m glad I painted it!

1x: Why do think people should people buy this print?
Brandon Boyd: A dark curse will follow them for the remainder of their days should they not!!!

1x: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Brandon Boyd: French Inhale.

1x: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
Brandon Boyd: When I was a little kid I would draw tiny pictures on tiny pieces of paper with tiny pencils, then distribute them to family members and friends. The first poop I left in a diaper. Haha, sorry. Not sorry.

1x: What artists inspired you early on?
Brandon Boyd: My mom painted and drew a lot. That is the earliest I can recall.

1x: What artists inspire you now?
Brandon Boyd: Too many to list. But today (as in right at this very moment) I am enthralled by the works of Arthur Rackham.

1x: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what? If not then what is your environment like when you work?
Brandon Boyd: I honestly don’t listen to music much when painting. Painting is sort of a time to drift into another world for me. It’s nice to have music playing, but I find it can actually steer and even dictate the vibration of the painting a little too much. So if I’m not just allowing the silence to inform me, I like to listen to Alan Watts lectures. His scholarly voice and vast intellectual vocabulary are a nice accompaniment to staring into paper and wet paint. Then occasionally I will just leave my studio door open and let the wind blow in the disparate sounds of my neighborhood. You hear all kinds of amazing things when doing that.

1x: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why?
Brandon Boyd: I like collaborating with photographers, and I’ve had the pleasure of working with a handful over the years. It’s nice to allow each artist their respective space in their talents and not just have paint on paint or ink on ink. Drawing and painting on photos is a lot of fun!

1x: What was the last piece of art that you bought?
Brandon Boyd: I bought two small paintings from The Spoke Art gallery in New York from their Wes Anderson group show.

1x: Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Brandon Boyd: Sure! Incubus will be releasing new music in 2016 and it’s gonna be like that moment in the Empire Strikes Back when Han Solo is about to be cryogenically frozen. You’re gonna hear our new jams and like Princess Leah, you’ll say, “I love you…!” And like Han Solo, we’ll be like, “I know.”

I may be excited about the new Star Wars…
