We caught up with Hawaiian artist Defer as he kicks things off for this year’s POW! WOW! x 1xRUN Print releases for POW! WOW! Hawaii 2016! Returning with two beautiful letter press prints “Write Into Existence” is Defer’s second letter press with us, his first sold out nearly instantly at 2015’s POW! WOW! 1x: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Defer: This piece is titled “Write Into Existence” and it is a combination of both words and abstraction. This piece to me represents the manifesting of thoughts and turning them into reality. It’s like putting energy into the universe and things start happening out of nowhere. To speak something into existence is one thing, but to write it, to etch it, further solidifies its course into existence.
1x: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had?
Defer: This piece stands on its own and is also a different variation of what I normally do.
1x: What materials were used to create this piece?
Defer: Just a brush and acrylic.
1x: When was the piece originally drawn?
Defer: Like a month ago.
1x: Tell us a little bit about your process and how the idea and execution came about?
Defer: The process I use is to abandon doubt and just have complete faith in what I’m doing.
1x: How long did this piece take from start to finish?
Defer: A days work and a harsh struggle with ADHD.
1x: What do you feel is unique about this piece compared to your other work?
Defer: This piece is based on the motion of water. Almost like a tide pool.
1x: Describe this piece with one gut reaction word.
Defer: Motion.

Defer: The plan is not to have a plan and let the spirit glow.
