Tatiana Suarez Reflects On 2015 In Latest Release

1x: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Tatiana Suarez: 2015 was a doozy of a year. I ended up creating more outdoor murals than studio works and really wanted to close out the year with an oil painting. This piece is intended to serve as a reflection of my year.

1x: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Tatiana Suarez: The piece was painted for the 5th Annual Supersonic Electronic show.

1x: What materials were used to create this piece?
Tatiana Suarez: Oil paint on wood panel.

1x: When was the piece originally created?
Tatiana Suarez: I started the piece on the last week of 2015 and finished it the first week of 2016.

1x: Tell us a little bit about your process and how the idea and execution came about?
Tatiana Suarez: The process for this piece happened very organically. I chose a reference photo that I connected with and just started painting without composing a sketch. I limited myself to a specific color palette and rather than refining too much, I chose to work with more expressive, loose marks. As for the bees, I’ve been incorporating them in my work since very early on. Bees are going thru a complicated existence right now and are at high risk. They were also a good way to describe the feeling I get in my stomach when I start most projects, haha.

1x: What do you feel is unique about this piece compared to your other work?
Tatiana Suarez: Growth. As I mentioned earlier, I barely painted in the studio last year. There’s a personal connection with this piece. I focused more on alluding an emotion rather than a static portrait.

1x: Describe this piece with one gut reaction word.
Tatiana Suarez: Melancholy.

1x: What are your expectation this year for POW!WOW! Hawaii?
Tatiana Suarez: Good expectations! This will be my third POW!WOW! It’s always great to go back to Hawaii and feel inspired. I’m looking forward to collaborating with artists who push me to work out of my comfort zone and learn from them while doing so.

1x: Without giving away too much, what are your plans for your mural out in Honolulu?
Tatiana Suarez: Stoked to be painting along side some of my NTL buddies. I may also be painting a second mural with one of the other participating artists.

1x: Any of the participating artists you are excited to see painting?
Tatiana Suarez: As always, they’ve curated an incredible roaster—I’m looking forward to watching everyone’s process. I was lucky enough to meet Andrew Hem at ArteSano back in December and am really looking forward to seeing what sort of magical mural he produces! I’m also pretty excited to finally meet Audrey Kawasaki.

1x: What’s your schedule like after POW!WOW! 2016? Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Tatiana Suarez: I’ve got some projects in the works, however, I’m not at liberty to discuss them just yet. I’m looking forward to being a participating artist at the Kaaboo Del Mar festival this year in San Diego. Besides that, I’m excited to spend more time in the studio and focus on developing new bodies of work.
