Los Angeles artist Hueman returns to POW! WOW! Hawaii for the second straight year, bringing her signature style to the world’s marquee mural festival. 2015 was a banner year for Hueman as she had massive murals throughout the country, her own make up line and wrapped up with an amazing mural inside of the new mecca for graffiti and street art Miami’s Wynwood Walls curated garden of murals. 1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Hueman: It’s called Split Decision, and portrays a woman suspended in a moment of thought.
1x: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Hueman: Yes, it was part of my solo show from last September, titled Just One Moment. It was used as the main image to represent the show. I created all the pieces in my solo show simultaneously, and this was the very first that I finished.
1x: What materials were used to create this piece?
Hueman: Latex house paint, spray paint, and acrylic.
1x: When was the piece originally created and how long did it take to complete?
Hueman: It was created over a few weeks in the summer of 2015. I think it took a total of 30 hours from start to finish, over the course of a few weeks.
1x: Tell us a little bit about your process and how the idea and execution came about?
Hueman: Every piece was painted with a wash of house paint and spray paint, and then another layer of splattered acrylic. My work is spontaneous and involves finding faces, shapes, or figures in the abstract wash, and bringing them to the forefront.
1x: What do you feel is unique about this piece compared to your other work?
Hueman: I think this piece marked a progression in the way I’ve been painting in the last year. Being the first piece completed for my solo show, it set the tone for the rest of the series. The way I currently render my subjects and utilize negative space was heavily influenced by this piece.
1x: Describe this piece with one gut reaction word.
Hueman: Contemplative.

1x: What are your expectation this year for POW!WOW! Hawaii 2016?
Hueman: Fun, relaxing, stressful, crazy, warm.
1x: Without giving away too much, what are your plans for your mural out in Honolulu?
Hueman: I’ll be painting with my crew NTL, we’re still getting our sketch figured out! But it’s going to look good!

Hueman: Everyone in NTL of course (Tatiana Suarez, Kamea Hadar, Jose Mertz, Woes, Lolo YS) and I’m also really excited to see what Audrey Kawasaki comes up with, and what Li Hill will build with his installation at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
1x: What’s your schedule like after POW!WOW! 2016? Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Hueman: I’ll be traveling and painting in a few mural festivals throughout the year, but I’ll also be spending a lot of time in the studio creating artwork for my 2017 solo show at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. And I’m getting married in September!
