Hula Uses Confined Spaces As Inspiration

Hawaiian artist Sean Yoro, aka Hula joins us with his latest edition Heau for the 2016 POW! WOW! x 1xRUN print suite! Created while Hula was down in Florida’s West Palm Beach, Heau finds the figure confined to a bridge’s underpass emerging from the water. The piece pulls from a recent series that Hula has created with figures interacting with the water. 1x: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Hula: Heau was painted under a bridge in West Palm Beach, Florida. It measures 23ft high by 20ft across. It was painted in oil paints going below the water line. It was inspired by being confined to boxes and shows the figure almost trapped in the space.

1x: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Hula: It was part of my water series where I paint figures interacting with walls along the water. I usually paint these figures from my surfboard, but with this specific painting we used a scaffold rigging in order to paint higher on the wall.

1x: When was this piece created and what materials were used ?
Hula: I did this in November 2015. It took about a week to prep and paint the wall. It was done entirely with oil paint.

1x: Tell us a little bit about your process and how the idea and execution came about?
Hula: I look at the space before hand and get inspired by the surrounding environment. With this piece, I saw the box and had the idea to portray a figure trapped inside of it.

1x: What do you feel is unique about this piece compared to your other work?
Hula: This piece was unique because I got to work on a larger scale outside which is much harder along the water.

1x: Describe this piece with one gut reactionary word.
Hula: Confined.
