We are excited to welcome Venice Beach-based artist Christina Angelina who joins us with Lokahi for the 2016 POW! WOW! x 1xRUN Print Suite! Created over a 48 hour sketching session in Las Vegas, Angelina’s debut RUN pulls inspiration from vintage flight plotting maps, a carcass of a bobcat and beautifully blends hyperdetailed ballpoint pen work with subtle and transparent screen print layers for this unique edition. 1x: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Christina Angelina: It’s a combination of elements that I’ve been playing with in my work since I was a kid. It’s a ballpoint pen drawing, using only one pen, acquired from a hotel room in Merida, Mexico. The paper-drawing surface is a dusty found object from the belly of a retired 747 airplane that currently resides in the Mojave Desert. The skull is also a found object, from the carcass of a bobcat that once hunted along the banks of the Colorado River. It is conceptually combining past/learned mythologies with future/imagined mythologies. The process is the result of a collaboration comprised of my original drawing and the screen-printing ingenuity of the brilliant scientists at 1xRUN.
1x: What materials were used to create this piece?
Christina Angelina: One plotting chart. One ballpoint pen. Several delicious sparking natural sodas from the fridge.
1x: When was the piece originally drawn and created?
Christina Angelina: It was created just a few weeks ago, in the month of January 2016. During a nonstop 48 hour Downtown Las Vegas drawing session. My dear friend was kind enough to sacrifice the very comfortable guest room & several snacks & drinks in the fridge of her lovely home for the life of this drawing.
1x: Tell us a little bit about your process and how the idea and execution came about?
Christina Angelina: The skull was on the dashboard of my car; it had been there for some time. The plotting chart was in the cup holder of my driver side passenger door. The pen was in my center console. My car somehow wound up in Las Vegas. My friend Natalie was kind enough to offer her guest room and amazing hospitality: 48 hours later there was a drawing. As for the printing, I told (1xRUN Master Printer) Jonny Alexander that I trusted him and the rest is history.
1x: How long did this piece take from start to finish?
Christina Angelina: 48 hours nonstop, for the drawing. Plus a few more days for the printing & screening process.
1x: What do you feel is unique about this piece compared to your other work?
Christina Angelina: Several things. Most notably, it is my first screen print. Also, it is the first ballpoint pen drawing that I have shared; otherwise they are only kept for personal use, in my sketchbooks. Also, the plotting chart includes the Islands of Hawaii, they are in her shoulder, that was unintentional but absolutely perfect.

Christina Angelina: Fuckingbadassweirdpastfuturedustyawesomeness.
1x: What are your expectation this year for POW!WOW! Hawaii?
Christina Angelina: A sunburn.
1x: Without giving away too much, what are your plans for your mural out in Honolulu?
Christina Angelina: I plan to hopefully finish it before my flight back to Los Angeles on the 15th of February…
1x: Any of the participating artists on this year’s roster that you are excited to see painting?
Christina Angelina: All of them. I’m honored to be in their company and can’t wait to see them in action.
1x: What’s your schedule like after POW!WOW! 2016? Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Christina Angelina: I plan to paint in the desert, several different deserts.
