Copyright has been daubing the streets of the UK with his trademark pink roses for years. Fusing street art, graffiti and more traditional styles, he uses a mixture of classic painting techniques and spray can art. He creates print styles with stencils, depth with spray paint, and texture with a paintbrush.
His paintings represent ideals from the modern world and culture, portrayed within classic imagery of simple beauty, often depicted by butterflies, flowers and beautiful women. His pictures represent a contradiction of idealism and unattainable visions of beauty found in fashion, music and popular culture.
1x: Tell us a little bit about this print series. Are they part of a recent them or show you had?
Copyright: These prints came of the back of my debut USA solo show ‘FABLES’ which is on right now at Vertical Gallery in Chicago. It’s taken from an original painting I did for that show which as a whole, is an introspective look at comprehending the incomprehensible. How you rationalize things you can’t pretend to understand like birth, death, loss, superstition etc., but presented as a series of powerful, attractive women with symbols implanted in the paintings to evoke personal reactions for the viewer. So you get this pretty painting, but with a deeper sometimes darker meaning.
1x: What materials were used to create these prints with?
Copyright: These are a combination of acrylic, spray paint and silkscreens.
1x: When were these prints created and how long did they take to complete?
Copyright: I just made them over the last few weeks. I’ve got a small, home made setup and it’s very DIY, but allows me to be really hands on with the prints. I made a printing table with some wood I acquired and a couple of door hinges. I don’t have a drying rack so I usually use a floor which means I can only produce 5-10 prints a day. This whole series took a couple of weeks start to finish as there is a few different processes for each print.

1x: What are your plans for 2016? Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Copyright: Right now I’m having my big show for the year ‘FABLES‘ at Vertical Gallery in Chicago. Also I’m designing a pin for a pin show with Stupid Crap in Australia. I’m working with my artist wife Gemma Compton on plans for this years UPFEST street art festival in Bristol. She’s this years featured artist. Next month I’m painting a Van then doing a couple of outdoor art fairs and signings over the summer.
