Jason Woodside Pulls Inspiration From Massive Berkeley Mural

Dynamic. That’s the word that comes up when you think of artist Jason Woodside. Born in Miami, Woodside came to New York before he had even turned 20 in the hopes of pursing a career making films. Instead, what some people might like to call fate intervened, and he returned to a passion for art. After dropping out of school, Woodside took to the streets of New York City, covering it in his signature mishmash of colors and patterns, a little piece of the Sunshine State to brighten Manhattan’s grayest days. Read on as Woodside gives us the background on his debut print release with 1xRUN Berkeley Landscape

1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Jason Woodside: This piece was originally painted on a building wall in Berkeley, California.

1x: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had?
Jason Woodside: This piece is pretty consistent to my body of work. The exterior piece worked with landscape quite well as the tapered lines mocked the hills leading down to the San Francisco Bay.

1x: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Jason Woodside: The original piece was created with spray paint.

1x: When was this piece created and how long did it take to complete?
Jason Woodside: I did this during the winter of 2015. The piece took 6 days and 60 feet tall.

1x: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Jason Woodside: I always try to work with the visual landscape given. Whether it’s a contrast or in the same tone. I felt this was a contrast of color I was adding to the city, but used in an optimistic or positive way.

1x: What do you feel is unique about this piece?
Jason Woodside: This will be the first piece I’ve done on an exterior wall and scaled down to a print.

1x: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Jason Woodside: Positive.

Jason Woodside: I was mostly inspired by music. I didn’t study too many artists.

1x: What artists inspire you now?
Jason Woodside: So many.. I dig those grimy, New York graffiti kids around 1999-2000 ha!

1x: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what? If not then what is your environment like when you work?
Jason Woodside: I listen to a lot of NPR at the moment at the studio. When I’m working outside or attached to a wall, loads of 80s punk rock to keep me going.
