Damon Soule Pays Homage To The Dog Star With Sirius B

We welcome in California artist Damon Soule as gets intergalactic with his debut RUN with his hand-embellished Sirius B along with two small studies available exclusively on 1xRUN. Paying homage to mythology tied to The Dog Star this piece was completed over the course of a few years, as Soule would incorporate dozens of smaller studies and paintings into the massive canvas. A part of the extremely talented Furtherrr collective, Soule works along side fellow 1xRUN alum Mars-1 and Oliver Vernon, Nome Edonna and David Lee as the group creates amazing immersive works both collaboratively and on their own. For this limited edition, Soule will be uniquely hand-embellishing each piece so be sure to snag one right here before they are gone! Read on for more from our very first RUN with Damon Soule…

1x: Tell us a little bit about this piece…
Damon Soule: Sirius B is a piece I completed for the show “Meet Me at the Dogstar” this past July. The show was a collaborative effort with my partner Sparkles Positron. The Dog Star is arguably the most prominent star in our collective unconscious. This piece is a representation of my fascination with the mythology surrounding this star.

1x: What materials was this piece created with?
Damon Soule: This piece was mainly done with acrylic.

1x: How long did this piece take to complete?
Damon Soule: I worked on this piece on and off for a couple of years. I tend to have one or two big pieces going and work on smaller pieces in between. I treat my smaller pieces as studies and when something interesting pops out I’ll try to incorporate those ideas into my larger works.

1x: Why should people buy this print?
Damon Soule: If you have a blank spot somewhere and this is something you could look at everyday then this is a print for you. Or maybe you know someone that also has a dog star fetish and you think they would dig this.

1x: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Damon Soule: Density.

1x: When did you first start making art?
Damon Soule: Like almost everybody, I started as soon as I could hold a crayon. As a full-time deal though, I’ve been making stuff since 1996!

1x: What artists inspired you early on?
Damon Soule: I would say my biggest influences were Dali and Moebius.

1x: What artists inspire you now?
Damon Soule: My biggest influences would have to be my friends and collaborators from Furtherrr. Mars-1, Oliver Vernon, Nome Edonna and David Lee. I’d say I’ve learned the most working with those guys over the years.

1x: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what? If not then what is your environment like when you work?
Damon Soule: I listen to tons of music when I’m working. Aphex Twin, Grateful Dead, you name it. I also listen to a lot of audio books and lectures. Sometimes if it’s a really nice day I just listen to the birds, since my studio is partially outdoors.

1x: If you could collaborate with any deceased artists who would it be and why?
Damon Soule: Gordan Matta Clark. I loved the way that guy thought and I think it would have been amazing to hear about his process first hand.

1x: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it?
Damon Soule: I’m not a 100 percent on this, but I bought two pieces by Seo in the 90’s from a group show. He had them priced at 99cents. I thought that was funny and he was pretty much the sf graff king at that time. I still have one of them, and it’s hanging up with a whole cluster of drawings by a whole bunch of my favorite contemporary artists.

1x: What was the last piece of art that you bought?
Damon Soule: I picked up a Felipe Pantone piece this year.

1x: Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Damon Soule: Well, we just uninstalled our show at Mirus so I’m in chill mode at the moment. I’ve got some things cooking, but nothing I want to disclose yet.
