1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight about this image?
Jillian Evelyn: I created the original painting for a group show curated by my friend Luke Pelletier. The bright colors and utilizing linework for the figure makes this piece one of my favorites and different than most of my paintings. Since it was for a group show, the painting was a one off and used as a way to explore different ways to approach a painting.

1x: When was this original piece created and what materials were used?
Evelyn: It was created at the beginning of February 2018 using flat matte house paint on a wood panel.

1x: Tell us how the idea and execution came about for this image? How long did this image take to create from start to finish?
Evelyn: I’m pretty sure this didn’t even start as a sketch, but rather jumped straight to the panel with a concept in mind. Sometimes it’s nice to not have an exact plan – it gives you the ability to make mistakes or learn something new. I believe I was working on it for a couple days. I usually get a piece to a close to finished spot and then hang it in my studio while I start a new painting. This gives me the opportunity to step back and decide if I should add/ change anything.

1x: What is unique about this piece compared with your other work?
Evelyn: I usually paint the figure a solid color but here I decided to focus on linework and allowing the background colors to come through.1x: Why should people buy this one of these prints?
Evelyn: I think that they should only buy it if it makes them feel something or inspires them.

1x: Describe this image in one gut reaction word.
Evelyn: Bright.

1x: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
Evelyn: I’ve been drawing since I was a kid and never really stopped. It’s always been the thing I’ve enjoyed the most. In this particular style – a couple years ago when I was new to Los Angeles and going through a lot of changes. I started drawing some real sassy female heads, that expanded to busts, and eventually full figures.

1x: What artists inspired you early on? What artists inspire you now?
Evelyn: Frida Kahlo & Margaret Kilgallen. (Currently) I’m drawn to a lot of abstract artists like Sonia Delaunay and Kazimir Malevich.

1x: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what? If not then what is your environment like when you work?
Evelyn: If I’m listening to music it’s on the calmer side like Rhye and Sohn. But I also listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts.

1x: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why? Any deceased artists?
Evelyn: That’s a difficult one, there are so many great artists. I think that I’d want to work with someone with skills beyond painting like a ceramicist or woodworker. (For the latter) Frida Kahlo or Margaret Kilgallen, I feel like I would take more away from working along side of them and getting to pick their brains about life.

1x: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it? The last?
Evelyn: I bought a skate deck painted by Leo Espinosa and I definitely still have it. I’d never get rid of any of the original pieces I own. I have an art buying problem to be honest. Pour me a drink and I’ll want to buy all the art…it’s the only thing I’ll splurge on. My partner and I just bought our first piece together – it’s this really great piece by Chaz Bear.

1x: Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Evelyn: I have two shows around the corner. First is an installation in the project room at New Image Gallery in Los Angeles opening May 12th. Then I have a big ole solo show at Superchief, New York opening June 15th.
