Victor Castillo No Pasaran

Fresh off of his latest show, we welcome back artist Victor Castillo, who returns with his latest edition, No Pasaran (They Will Not Pass). Available in two sizes 18×18 and 24×24, this piece recently made it’s debut in Istanbul, Turkey this past September. 1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight about this image?
Victor Castillo: No Pasaran means “They shall not pass!” in Spanish. The slogan was used during the Spanish civil war against the fascists.

1x: Was this image part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Castillo: Yes, I made this painting originally for an exhibition titled The Invisible Cage. It was exhibited by my gallerist Isabel Croxatto at the Istanbul, Turkey art fair this September 2018, where it sold.

1x: Is there something special about Pinocchio for you?
Castillo: For me Pinocchio is the perfect figure or metaphor for the lie, which is instantly recognizable for everyone.

Is it true you have a collection of Pinocchios?
Castillo: Yes, but not only Pinocchio. I have a vintage toy collection that I got from different countries.

1x:  How about this latest body of work, The Invisible Cage, can you tell us more about it; what is it about?
Castillo: In The Invisible Cage I talk about the classroom and education as indoctrination. The exhibition mainly of images in the classroom, at school, of children under a spell.

1x: When did it begin? When will we be able to see the show?
Castillo: I’ve been working on this exhibition for most of this year. The Invisible Cage will open on Santiago, Chile on November 14th at Isabel Croxatto gallery.

1x: Are there any artists (new or old/visual or otherwise) that have been inspiring you as of late?
Castillo:  Emir Kusturica, a filmmaker from Serbia; Kerry James Marshall; Wes Anderson animations; and I fell in love with Jim Jarmusch’s movie Only Lovers Left Alive.

1x: We’re already nearing the end of the year. What are your highlights from 2018, are there any other upcoming projects we should know about?
Castillo: I made a short film called Hollywood Dreams that was released at the Pictoplasma festival in Berlin in May. I will continue working on on animations with Loica studio this coming year, and I have several upcoming exhibitions in Europe, in Madrid, Paris and London.
