ONEFIFTY Original Paintings by Askew
1xRun: Let’s talk a bit about the ONEFIFTY series, what materials did you use to create these original paintings?
Askew: These are all painting in acrylic, cel-vinyl and waterborne glaze again.
1xRun: When were these pieces created?
Askew: They were made as part of the ONEFIFTY show with Gary Silipa and Elliot Francis Stewart last year. We initially made 50 works each and sold them for $150.00 and only allowed 150 people into the show. It was fun. We sold quite a few and had to top up to 50 each again for our online edition which also went pretty good. These works are the remaining ones and are a combination of works from both shows.
1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Askew: I wanted to do a show like this to create an immense amount of very accessible work to show with two other artists I really believe in. It was so fun.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about for the series as a whole?
Askew: Well, just rethinking my approach to putting on shows. After doing a very exhaustive solo show where I spent 6 months making work, wanted there to be more fun and spontaneity to the whole thing. Plus displaying all these works in the same size, colours and dimensions in one space looked awesome. First show I’ve done in a while where there were people queuing outside before the doors opened.
1xRun: How long did all of these pieces take to create?
Askew: We spent 2 weeks making the first 50 each and then about a week topping up the levels for the next round.
1xRun: What is unique about these pieces compared with some of your other work?
Askew: Due to the scale, they are very graphic by nature and lend themselves to being bought and displayed in a set. Heaps of people took that approach which was awesome, bought three or five and display them arranged in some way that makes sense to them. I like that.
1xRun: Why should people buy one of these original paintings?
Askew: A good chance to buy a very affordable hand painted work from me.
