Bask Celebrates His Birthday With David & Goliath

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this original piece, was it part of a recent, theme or series of work?
Bask:  This piece is not part of any particular series but it is in tone with the work I’ve been making this year. I have been inspired by mans potential to overcome hardships. Weather it is facing your personal demons to drawing inspiration from Friedrich Nietzsche’s theories about the Übermensch.This latest piece titled, David and Goliath, draws delivers from a similar well. The story of David and Goliath focuses on the underdog that overcame what others thought to be an impossible battle to win. The idea of revolting against the status quo.

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece?
Bask: While in Detroit last month, I salvaged various pieces of panels and debris that I could use as a base for upcoming projects. This piece is painted in one of those panels I collected.

1xRun: When was the piece drawn and created?
Bask: This work is fresh out of the oven and was finished last week.

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Bask: The work is all hand painted using discarded paint, found objects and cheap brushes. I find that working with imperfect mediums gives my work a ratty, unpolished look I strive for.  I wanted this painting to look as though it was cut out of a larger piece on a random back ally wall. The work pushes past the edges to highlight that the full story is beyond just the images within the painting.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Bask: Ambition and drive and rebellion does not come without massive hurdles to overcome. Taking risks a chances to live the life you want rather then simply sit back and accept what’s presented to you.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Bask:  I’ve been working this painting out in my head, off and on for a while but the execution was done in one night. Not including the time it took to box frame it out.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece compared with some of your other work?
Bask: This piece stands out compared to some of my other works just in the way it’s laid out. My pieces usually start in the middle and build out from a centralized image, whereas this piece builds from the edges and draws the viewer inward.

1xRun: Why should people buy one of these prints?
Bask: Hopefully because they like the art and connect with the message imbedded within.

1xRun: Describe these pieces in one gut reaction word.
Bask: Rise up and overcome.

1xRun: This is a birthday image for you, why did you chose this image?
Bask: I wanted to do a print release on my birthday and I wanted it to be of the latest painting I made. That’s as far as I thought it through. This just happened to be the piece that was birthed.
