Bask Returns With So Hood For Pow Wow 2014

1xRUN Thru Interview
So Hood by Bask

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Bask:
This piece was made for an event I did at the Saint Petersburg Museum of Art. The show paired 5 artists with 5 locally celebrated chefs to collaborate. The chef was to make a dish inspired by the work. The piece was also made in as part of an on going series of portrait works painted mostly in halftones. In addition to being shown at the Saint Petersburg Museum of Art, it was also chosen by Jonathan Levine for an exhibit he curated at Parlor Gallery in Asbury Park NJ. Yes, the original piece is available here on 1xRUN.

1xRun: When was this piece created and with what materials?
Bask:
This piece was created very late in 2013. It has many layers. I first processed down panels to get the tiled effect I desired. Then I started to lay down layer of texture which eventually ended with the portrait seen.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Bask:
The piece from assembly to clear coat took a little over a week to complete.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Bask:
I think in the way it’s constructed. I like working with weather old wood for the unique texture it provides. With this piece I didn’t want to use a single piece of wood but several to achieve a wood tile look much like the facade of an abandoned building.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Bask:
People should buy this piece because it hopefully speaks to them in a similar way it spoke to me when I made it. Also, people should buy the print because prints from 1xRUN are simply put, fucking awesome!

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Bask:
Bold.

1xRun: This will be your first year joining the Pow Wow Hawaii family, who are some of the artists you’re really excited to see painting out there?
Bask:
I’m very excited to be part of such a incredible event. I have a lot of respect for the organizers and artists involved and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone involved.

1xRun: Anybody you’d personally like to collaborate with if the opportunity presented itself?
Bask:
I’m a big fan of Meggs and love the energy of his work. During Pow Wow, he and I are going to collaborate on a mural. I’m looking forward to that.

1xRun: Have you been to Hawaii before or will this be your first time out there? What are you looking forward to?
Bask:
I’ve been to Hawaii a few times. But this will be my first time in Oahu outside of the airport. My sister lives in Kauai so all of my visits have been spent on that island.

1xRun: Do you have any plans for your wall out there or are you just going to improvise it when you get there?
Bask:
Meggs and I are in contact and throwing some ideas around. I want to have a basic game plan or jumping off point and figure the rest out there.

1xRun: You’ve been staying crazy busy per usual, bring us up to speed on some of the walls you’ve been doing lately?
Bask:
I just finished a massive wall in Saint Petersburg FL featuring a retrospective of some past works I’ve made living here. The select images were recreated in a series of monochromatic sections. A lot of the pieces shown will be very familiar to people who follow 1xRUN. A number of the pieces referenced were released as prints. The other mural was a collaboration with friend and colleague , Chris Parks of Palehorse Design.

1xRun: How did 2013 wrap up for you?
Bask:
2013 was a big year for me. One of the best in memory. I’m working hard to make this year even bigger.

1xRun: Aside from Pow Wow 2014, what are your plans for the new year?
Bask:
After Pow Wow, I start work on my solo show at Black Book Gallery in Denver in May, then a solo show at my home away from home Detroit where Inner State Gallery will host that. Then I get a little break and start plotting my work for Art Basel Miami and my 2 man show at 1AMSF in San Francisco CA. And of course there are a number of group shows, murals and regular print releases here.
