Ornamented Subconscious by Beau Stanton
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this original image, how did it come about?
Beau Stanton: The original was created with oil on canvas over four screen printed layers. The idea began when I wanted to present an alternate view of the iconic skull image. I thought it could be really interesting to see from the inside looking out of a skull with all of the interior cavities and such. 
The first step was to take reference photos from various angles inside and out of a model skull. Next I designed patterns to mimic the contours of the skull, separated the design into four layers, and screen printed them onto the canvas. The final step was to fully fully render out the skull with oil paint.
1xRUN: When was this piece created and with what materials ?
Beau Stanton: I made the original painting for my Archaic Ornaments show at Bold Hype Gallery last April, the prints were created over the course of a week in March with acrylic based screen print ink on 110 lb. French Paper and 16 ounce copper sheet.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about? What inspired you to print these limited edition on copper?
Beau Stanton: I decided to adapt this image into a screen print because the strong graphic elements and color scheme seemed to be ideal for the four color process. I’ve always liked the idea of printing on different materials and copper seemed to offer an interesting quality to this particular print. 
Because the inks used are mostly transparent, the finished print takes on a kind of holographic look when the light reflects off of the copper and passes back through the ink layers. It’s difficult to capture this effect in photos, but the end result is really beautiful.
1xRun: How long did these take to create?
Beau Stanton: About a week including coating, shooting the screens, printing 4 colors & hand finishing.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece compared with some of your other work?
Beau Stanton: This print is unique in that each one is created completely by hand in my studio by me. After printing I also hand finished each print to add additional detail and contrast.
1xRun: Why should people buy these prints?
Beau Stanton: This is my first 4 color screen print edition and it is one of my strongest images.

Beau Stanton: Mindblowing.
1xRun: Bring us up to speed since your last release, what have you been up to?
Beau Stanton: The last few months I’ve been working on a lot of new small works for group shows including the Collector Starter Kit show at Corey Helford, “Knock it Out’ at Blackbook in Denver, and the 5th Anniversary show at Last Rites in NYC. I also recently painted a mural in San Diego for Converse that was featured on the back cover of Juxtapoz in March.
1xRun: You’ve been traveling a lot, tell us some of the latest inspirations you’ve been finding.Beau Stanton: I recently visited Istanbul for the first time and was blown away by the architecture and ornamentation. While there I took a shit ton of photos and I’m currently working on applying some of the reference into my next show.
1xRun: Any other big plans for the Spring and Summer? We’ve been seeing your name pop up a ton with murals and in lots of group shows, what else do you have going on?
Beau Stanton: I’m about to leave for Tokyo to attend the launch of my smoking slipper collaboration with JUMP Deluxe, an Asian based shoe company. The designs are based on three of my paintings including this print edition’s image, Ornamented Subconscious. 
The next trip is to Hamburg Germany in May for Millerntor Gallery which takes place in a Soccer stadium where a ton of artists create murals and installations to raise money to bring clean water to Africa. Aside from that I am pretty consumed preparing for my next solo exhibition at Last Rites Gallery in New York which opens on June 29th.
