1x: Tell us a little bit about these pieces, anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Bisco Smith: These pieces were created for the show I just opened called Process at C.A.V.E Gallery this past weekend. The writing elements are sections from the artist statement for the show.

Process — the unplanned, unexpected, the collected in a corner, saved in a stack, the leftovers, the beauty, the magic in the scraps. Process is motion. It’s the forever in the moment, until it isn’t. It’s the notes, the plans, the dates, maps, and scribbles. It’s the paint that missed the canvas, the test before the print. It’s the ghost for the catching, the zone for the coasting. Process is forever unfolding.

1x: What materials were used to create these pieces?
Bisco Smith: The original paintings are created out of latex and spray paint. The screen prints are hand-pulled.

1x: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Bisco Smith: I just work and let things happen, so through the process they came to life.

1x: Why should people buy one of these prints?
Bisco Smith: Alone they are strong, bold and the print and paper are really solid and feel great. Together they make a powerful set that capture duality and raw energy in the writing.

1x: Describe these two pieces in one gut reaction word.
Bisco Smith: Bold.

1x: Tell us a bit about your recent solo show, was this an entirely new body of work?
Bisco Smith: Over the last few months I have been working on new pieces as well as taking the left overs, scraps, and elements from my studio that have always held my interest and working them into this exhibition. The overall idea is to highlight the process and the unplanned energy that is captured while working towards an end goal.

1x: What strides do you feel you made in this most recent exhibition?
Bisco Smith: I think hands down is my best body of work yet, it’s versatile, bold, and has a story with the Process theme.

1x: What were some of your favorite pieces in the show and why?
Bisco Smith: I love the 2 stacks pieces as originals, and as the prints. The installation itself is definitely up there for me too. I had to move studios recently and in that move I decided to take the walls I used to paint on while working there with me. These are a big part of the Process installation so it ties in as a whole and really brings something raw and authentic into the space.

1x: What else is on the docket for you this year?
Bisco Smith: I am in a great flow of projects at the moment. Traveling, and doing more street work is always the goal. All in all I want to just keep it moving and continue pushing myself to create new work and explore new levels.
