Brendan Monroe “Hole” Metallic Screen Prints For Pow Wow Hawaii 2014

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?

Brendan Monroe: The original was of this piece was a small piece painted or drawn with ink and white gouache on paper. It was made as a part of my comic series ‘Islands’. In the story there’s a world that is entirely seen as wavy and blurred into abstracted line work, this piece is a part of that place.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had?
Brendan Monroe:  I started working in strictly black and white a couple years ago as a challenge to try something new and see how I could translate a drawing with a limited visual language. Since then, I’ve made comics and a handful of other ink and gouache drawings. If they’re a series as a whole, they cover a lot of ground, from very careful detail drawings, to super loose brushwork drawings.

Brendan Monroe: The original as made in the fall of 2012 using a mix of ink and gouache, but this is the first time it’s been reproduced as a print.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Brendan Monroe:  Longer than I expected, I think a couple days.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Brendan Monroe:   I realized something with this about the way I draw. I use texture and surface to create form and dimention in a drawing. This piece helped me realize that this visual method is one of the best for me to approach painting. It’s a little different than a more traditional light source plus shadow approach. 1xRun: Why should people buy this piece/print? Brendan Monroe: They should buy it if they get sucked into it.

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Brendan Monroe: Pulling.

1xRun: This will be your first year joining the Pow Wow Hawaii family, who are some of the artists you’re really excited to see painting out there?
Brendan Monroe:  Stoked to see that Wayne White is there, Dave Kinsey, Andrew Schoultz…I’m really looking forward to meeting new people who I otherwise wouldn’t. I expect that will be one of the coolest things about the trip.

1xRun: Anybody you’d personally like to collaborate with if the opportunity presented itself?
Brendan Monroe: Hmm. That’s hard to say. I like Aaron De La Cruz’s work. Sometimes the best collaborations can come from the least expected places though.

1xRun: Have you been to Hawaii before or will this be your first time out there? What are you looking forward to?
Brendan Monroe: I’ve only been to the big island. I’m looking forward to the weather and the island time kind of schedule.

1xRun: Do you have any plans for your wall out there or are you just going to improvise it when you get there?
Brendan Monroe: I’ll try and plan something, but I’ll mostly feel it out when I’m there.
