1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, what materials were used?
Dan Quintana: This was my first piece fusing these medias of graphite, ink and charcoal together. It was a new fun way for me to experiment with graphite that would lead to my more intricate charcoal work. It was created in 2011 and was the foundation piece of my latest graphite, ink and charcoal body of work.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Dan Quintana: I was taking a look at x-rays and decided to combined that with my figurative work. Anatomical studies.
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Dan Quintana: 2 days.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Dan Quintana: The multimedia that was applied to the piece.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Dan Quintana: It’s super awesome.
1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Dan Quintana: Burn.
1xRun: You recently wrapped up a show, anything else on tap for the summer?
Dan Quintana: I am currently working on my collab show for Scope in Miami. Apart from that, I plan on painting a couple murals in LA.
1xRun: You have worked with & shown with some dynamic artists, who have been your favorites?
Dan Quintana: I do not have a favorite. All have been great in their own unique way.
1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? How about now?
Dan Quintana: Hieronymus Bosch, Arnold Böcklin and Max Ernst. Still those three inspire me.
1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work? W hat is your environment like when you work?
Dan Quintana: I have ran out of music to listen to. It’s now mostly classical — Chopin is a favorite — and live feeds of police scanners. Those two go well hand in hand.
