1xRUN Thru Interview
Lie With Me by JeanPaul Mallozzi
1xRun: Tell us a bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: I decided not to sell the original yet. I realized that while I’ve been so lucky to have most of my work sell, I’ve never kept anything for myself. So I wanted to keep it for my own collection. I may reconsider later in the future, but for now, it’s hanging out in my home.
1xRun: Was this part of a recent show that you had?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: It was made for my solo exhibition at 101/Exhibit in Miami. It was part of a massive undertaking, because the gallery was 5000 sq ft, and I had to occupy most of the space.
1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: Oil on board
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: I created this piece back in 2012. The title has a double meaning. The first taking the title literally. The other side, I made this painting during a time when I was head deep in a rough relationship. I found myself “going through the motions” knowing things were at an end, just waiting for one of us to make the move to end it officially. I wanted the guys gestural face to mimic a sad smile looking down on her, but the woman looking at you (the viewer) as the object of affection. You become the greener pasture. It’s about having the courage to break away from something you know isn’t healthy for you any longer.
1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: I moved into a new studio where I’m finally able to go large with the oil paintings, so I’m pretty stoked and anxious about the undertaking.
1xRun: How long did this piece take?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: On and off, I would say 2 – 3 weeks.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: It was my return back to oils after a long hiatus. I came back to it with a new point of view, a freshness and eagerness to exercise my personal point of view using the contour line facial echoing that I was using in the previous graphite works.
1xRun: Why do you feel people should buy this piece?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: Most of us can say, been there, done that, rolling your eyes remembering that whole scenario and being grateful that you’ve moved on from it. If you’re still in it, then I hope it encourages you to take the first step for the better.
1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
JeanPaul Mallozzi: Brave.
1xRun: What have you been up to since our last release? How has 2014 went so far for you?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: 2014 has been pretty busy. I was happy to participate in The Convergence group show at CoproNason gallery in March.
1xRun: Any big shows or events coming up?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: I just finished my largest oil painting for a group show at Gitana Rosa gallery up in NYC. I was invited to participate in this years Suggestivism’s group show at Copro gallery this summer. The artist line up is insane. I’m also making a piece for Marcas gallery in Santa Ana California this summer. I also just found out I will be having a 2 man show at Kai Lin Gallery next year in Atlanta.
1xRun: Any friends or other artists been inspiring you as of lately?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: Jason Shawn Alexander’s work I’ve seen and the sheer scale of the paintings is so impressive, all the while being loose and accurate at the same time.
1xRun: Where else can people find you?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: Website – Facebook – Instagram
