Jeff McMillan Returns With Pepto Dismal

1xRUN Thru Interview
Pepto Dismal I + II by Jeff McMillan

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about these pieces, were they part of theme or show?
Jeff McMillan:  I’m opening the vault here, these pieces were done for a show way back in 2008 called “Bailout.”  Slamxhype (a fashion street wear art blog) hosted it in downtown Los Angeles.  The work was themed around the economic crisis and the bailout.  I centered it around fast food.  It seems that when money is tight, people eat more crap. The fast food industry capitalizes on times like these.

1xRUN: When was this piece created and with what materials?
Jeff McMillan:  These two pieces were created in 2008 using acrylic on paper.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Jeff McMillan: The work was themed around the economic crisis and the bailout.  I centered it around fast food.  It seems that when money is tight, people eat more crap. The fast food industry capitalizes on times like these.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Jeff McMillan:   I’d say about a night each, 5-1or 2pm probably

1xRun: What is unique about these two prints?
Jeff McMillan:  These pieces were the first two split portraits I did.

1xRun: Why should people buy these prints?
Jeff McMillan:  I think these characters have a relationship with anyone who’s around today one way or another.  They’re so recognizable around the world as far as brands go.  We all grew up with this stuff, even if you didn’t eat it.  I think it’s a suitable throwback and a reality check of a print if anything.

1xRun: Describe these prints in one gut reaction word.
Jeff McMillan: Consume!

1xRun: bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to since your last RUN with us?
Jeff McMillan:  I’ve been working on a couple museum shows, one opens this month.  The other one is next year.  I have a solo show up in San Francisco in 2014 as well.

I frequently contribute to RVCA’s seasons doing shirt graphics, as well as being on the ANP team.  I have a couple side projects going on that are about to go live in the next month or two. A lot of exciting stuff!
