Jon Burgerman Returns With 6-Color Screen Print

1xRun Thru Interview
Alien by Jon Burgerman

1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, what materials was this piece printed on and drawn with?
Jon Burgerman: The original images were hand drawn on paper earlier this year. The series of drawings were then scanned into Photoshop and recomposed to form the print.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Jon Burgerman:  This is the sequel print to my last 1xRun print ‘City Girl’. That print was about urban dwelling, the noise and chaos, following a trip to Mexico. This continues that theme and is more about me, a British artist, living in New York. I’m the alien, or maybe everything around me in alien. It’s confusing and difficult to tell sometimes.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Jon Burgerman:   Many many hours, but I didn’t keep time.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Jon Burgerman:  As with any art it’s a product of it’s time. It’s a product of me, so to speak.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Jon Burgerman:  They should buy it if they like it and enjoy seeing different things in it each time they look at it. Perhaps they will piece together a narrative amongst the characters and forms within it.

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Jon Burgerman:  Chaotickle.1xrun_Jon_Burgerman_Flwraed_18x24_Web011xRun: Bring us up to speed on what you have been up to lately?
Jon Burgerman:  For the last month I’ve been back in Europe. I gave a lecture at the Pictoplasma conference in Berlin and then organized a collaborative mural with the attendees. I also made some live animated projections for the festival’s opening party using Tagtool for the iPad.

Then I traveled to London to take part in Pick Me Up, a two week art and illustration festival at Somerset House. I’m interested in getting ‘the audience’ to engage and participate in making works so I invented a game for them to play. The game was a means to encourage collaboration between me and the other player, so we could talk and draw together without the fear of the dreaded blank canvas. The game is called Game, Sketch and Match.

I met some really nice people and we made some cool drawings together. It was fun. Now I’m back in New York for a little while and soon will be off to Ohio to create a mural in Cleveland.

1xRun: What are your plans for the next few months?
Jon Burgerman:  I will be in New York for the rest of May and most of June. I will have some original work for sale during the early June Bushwick Open Studios, (even though I do not have a studio in Bushwick). I may go to Asia for July for a series of exhibitions, workshops and lectures.

Jon Burgerman:    Have you turned all the lights out before going home? Remember to lock the back door and give the dog a bone. Is there anything else I’ve forgotten?

1xRun: Where else can people find you?
