Joshua Petker Returns To 1xRUN With Beached

1xRun Thru Interview
Beached by Joshua Petker

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this original painting, when was it created?
Joshua Petker: the original work was painted with acrylic and inks on canvas and measured 36×36″.  The original painting was made as a part of my June 2012 solo show, Adrift, at LeBasse Projects in Los Angeles.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Joshua Petker: My show, Adrift, took an a nautical theme, a first for me. Inspired by the traditional existential metaphor of being lost at sea, each painting in the show played with the ideas of being lost and alone. You can view more from the entire show on my website.1xRun_Joshua_Petker_Sailboat_17x17_FB1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Joshua Petker: I work on many different paintings at the same time. I’m not exactly sure how long this piece took in particular but I worked on the solo show in its entirety for about a year.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Joshua Petker: It’s a fun mix of at least 3 different paintings styles.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Joshua Petker: They should buy it if they find it interesting and attractive and if they want it.1xRun_Joshua_Petker_Sailboat_17x17_Web011xRun: When did you first start making art?  What was your first piece?
Joshua Petker: I started making art seriously in about 2002.  My early works were very inspired by Klimt and Modigliani. Lots of portrait works. I’ve always been very interested in the human figure.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? How about currently?
Joshua Petker: I was very inspired by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka early on.  I still look to history for a lot of inspiration though these days have been more interested in Francis Picabia, Raymond Hains, Jacques Villegle to name a few. Joshua Petker: I mostly listen to classical music while painting. If not classical then I listen to podcasts. The Partially Examined Life and Modern Art Notes are my favorite podcasts to listen to while working.

Joshua Petker: I don’t own a lot of art but have been fortunate enough to trade a few pieces with artists I admire.

1xRun: How as 2013 been so far? Can you bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to?
