1x: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Kevin Lyons: Well, I am at heart always an art director. So I generally need a theme when I start a new piece. As a huge collector of early Rock Steady, I was excited about doing a group portrait of the Originators of Rock Steady and Reggae, but in my Monster Style. So no one is drawn literally in any way, but rather done as Monster interpretations of each artist. That way, it works as both a Monster Pattern as well as a historical reference piece.
1x: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?Kevin Lyons: Well, I am a huge Reggae 45 collector, and I have done many pieces over my career inspired by and directly relating to Rock Steady and early Reggae. So it is definitely a recurring theme.
1x: When was this piece created and what materials were used ?
Kevin Lyons: I used Sumi Ink and Watercolors. Unfortunately, way too close to the deadline…So literally in the last two weeks.
1x: Tell us a little bit about your process and how the idea and execution came about?
Kevin Lyons: I love doing Monster Party patterns and I always just begin by jumping right in. No two are exactly alike. And like with murals each Monster inspires the Monster next to it as I move across the page.
1x: What do you feel is unique about this piece compared to your other work?
Kevin Lyons: Well, it is now only my second Monster Party print and the last ones sold out quickly. So I feel it gives some of the 1xRun fans another shot at getting one. It is also unique because it has been a while since I did something Reggae-inspired.
1x: Describe this piece with one gut reaction word.
Kevin Lyons: Blunted.
1x: What are your expectation this year for POW!WOW! Hawaii?
Kevin Lyons: Awesomeness as usual. It never disappoints.
1x: Without giving away too much, what are your plans for your mural out in Honolulu?
Kevin Lyons: I have a smaller wall this year, so less torture than last year’s ridiculous 140 ft. wall……Monsters will be in effect….I also have a bit of a surprise collaboration wall as well….so stay tuned!
1x: Any of the participating artists on this year’s roster you are excited to see painting?
Kevin Lyons: Well, I am a huge fan of Hiroshi, so I am curious to see what he is going to do!
1x: What’s your schedule like after POW!WOW! 2016? Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Kevin Lyons: I will be there the main week after the Opening events. I am looking forward to this Print opening for sure! Also, the SECRET WALLS Battle should be epic! I am the MC this year!
