1x: Tell us a little bit about this piece, anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Kristin Farr: It’s a confetti cloud made of magic diamonds.

1x: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?

Kristin Farr: I use these magic diamonds to form shapes or patterns on many different surfaces. The confetti cloud is a new thing and I don’t know if it’s exploding or imploding, but it represents all the amazing junk in the universe.

1x: When was this piece created and what materials were used?

Kristin Farr: This piece was created in the fall of 2015 was when I started it and it took around 28 hours to finish! Gouache, canvas, pencil, brushes.

1x: Tell us a little bit about your process and how the idea and execution came about?

Kristin Farr: I draw all the diamonds freehand in pencil, starting with a star-shape pattern that I sort of lose and pick up again as I’m building the shape. Then I color it in with paint. Sometimes I use a thematic color palette, like warmer or bluer, but the confetti cloud has every color.

1x: What do you feel is unique about this piece compared to your other work?
Kristin Farr: I have only used the diamonds in a confetti cloud shape two times, and this is the bigger one. It’s a new exploration of how these magic diamonds can behave in a dynamic way.

1x: Describe this piece with one gut reaction word.
Kristin Farr: Candy!

1x: What are your expectation this year for POW!WOW! Hawaii?

Kristin Farr: I expect to hang out with many artists I admire, paint a wall in collaboration with one of them, enjoy the sun, jump in the ocean, see friends, drink milk tea and get a shark tattoo. I will also be documenting everyone’s murals for Juxtapoz.

1x: Without giving away too much, what are your plans for your mural out in Honolulu?
Kristin Farr: Diamonds! Or monsters. Something magical. I think my wall is very long and but not very tall, so it will be fun to work with a skinny rectangle.

1x: Any of the participating artists you are excited to see painting?

Kristin Farr: Every single one for sure, but some I’ve wanted to see in person that I haven’t yet are 1010, Pantone and Slinkachu.

1x: What’s your schedule like after POW!WOW! 2016? Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Kristin Farr: Getting ready for a show at the Berkeley Art Center in April, and a mural for a bike corral in San Francisco that I’ll be doing as soon as the rain lets up.
