1xRUN Thru Interview

Original Paintings + Chest Piece Series by Malt

1xRUN: Can you tell us a little bit about these latest original paintings in the Chest Piece series?

Malt: The series was created in August 2012 . The idea for the “Chest Piece” series was more of a accident. I was painting a owl on a  rolled steel door but wasn’t digging the feathers in the center. Many attempts later i just decided to try to incorporate the texture of the door, painting each of the vertical lines in the center a solid color. which worked for me. So i decided to make a series out of it….The “Chest Piece” series.

1xRUN:  Along with these pieces we also have some other original paintings of yours, can you tell us a little bit about those?

Malt:  Some of these pieces are pulled from “Royal Blood” which is the second installment of my “Acid Forest” series. These pieces were painted in late 2011/early 2012. With this series I wanted to get more in depth with the characters that take up residence inside of the “Acid Forest”. The series covers a range of different characters from “The Entrance” which showcases the gatekeepers of the forest, so to speak, to “Sir Nolte The 3rd”, who is the head honcho, and everyone in between.

There are also the “Greyscale” series which followed the colorful “Royal Blood”. With these pieces I wanted to strip the color and make the paintings work with a limited palette (minus the eyes) while still adding layers to create contrast and depth. Each is individually hand-painted with acrylic and spraypaint and comes framed and ready to hang.

1xRun: When did you first start making art? What artists inspired you early on?

Malt: Early on like most kids, but didn’t taking it seriously until the early/mid 90’s. Early on Andy Howell, Jim Phillips and Pushead. Growing up skateboarding those dude’s board graphics we pretty much my art school.

1xRun: What artists inspire you now?

Malt: Mostly friends I paint with, anybody that’s really pushing themselves.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what? If not then what is your environment like when you work?

Malt: Most definitely, as for what it depends on the mood I’m in. A few are Bonobo, Led Zepplin, Seaweed, Dj Shadow (minus the tunes with dudes rapping over his beats) Superdrag & Surfer Blood.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why?

Malt: How Nosm…I really dig the work they are doing these days and I think I could learn a lot in the process.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it?

Malt: It was a trade but not sure the exact piece. Pretty sure I still have it.

1xRun: What was the last piece of art that you bought?

Malt: I actually haven’t bought any pieces yet, all the art I own were trades, but I do have my eye on a few Bob Ross originals on Ebay.

You see what we did there…

1xRun: Where can people find you on the internette?

Malt: WebsiteFacebook Artist Page
