Rime Returns With “Moving Into Now” Prints + “Dangerous Joseph Shit” Limited Edition Zine

1xRUN Thru Interview
Moving Into Now & Dangerous Joseph Shit by Rime

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about the execution “Moving Into Now”, when was this piece created and with what materials?
Rime:  “Moving Into Now” was created over a few sessions over a week and a half period back in the summer of 2013 with markers and shit. I worked on it while in New York City and Los Angeles. The original is the same size as the prints here, 18”x24” inches. There is no definite game plan with these type of works. I draw when in the mood and build on whatever is already on the page.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece compared to your other work?
Rime:
This piece has elements inspired by my move back to New York City earlier this year. After 8 years out west it’s nice to be back home.

1xRun: Let’s talk about “Dangerous Joseph Shit” a 60-page limited edition zine that catalogs some of your recent work, tell us about the theme and what people can expect in this zine.
Rime: “Dangerous Joseph Shit” is a compilation of some recent work from the past two years. The aim with the layout is to show the influence graffiti has on my paper work and vice versa.

1xRun: The idea for “Dangerous Joseph Shit” began as a follow up to your Arrest Sheet portfolios, tell us a bit about why you feel that zines and zine culture are so important  to graffiti culture?
Rime:
I think zines are a good way to display a portion of work or theme in a non formal way. Growing up in graffiti, collecting magazines and books was always a big deal. With the internet taking over of the documentation of graffiti it seems rare to see graffiti in print and not on a screen.

1xRun: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
Rime: I was first acknowledged for drawing at the age of Four. The first thing I drew that somewhat resembled the reference was a marching band Mickey Mouse. I started writing graffiti in 1991 but did not attempt a piece until 1993. That fist piece said “Demos” (my younger brothers name). It was painted at night, in the alley behind a shopping center on Staten Island, New York. Every time a car came down the alley I would have to run and hide behind a fence.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? What artists inspire you now?
Rime: My influences early on came from Sunday newspaper color comic strips, coloring books, Garbage Pail Kids, and cartoons. As for current influences, it’s is any artist that gets personal in their work. Honesty, informality and cutting through the bullshit that buffers us all.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work?
Rime: I do listen to music and am known to have a very eclectic taste. I prefer good music which comes in all genres. Similar to good movies being so whether they are dramas, comedies, or action. When I am out in the public drawing at a coffee shop or something; I bring an ipod but never listen to it. It’s only there for emergencies that include terrible setting music or annoying sounds around. I usually end up eavesdropping on surrounding conversations, or taking in the environment. I can listen to my same 3,000 (or so) songs when I go home.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why?
Rime: I paint alone or with friends. I’m content with that program.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any deceased artists who would it be and why?
Rime: I don’t care about this type of fantasy. I tried to think of something honest, off, or interesting. Nothing motivating comes to mind. Maybe Abbott & Costello, I don’t know.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it?
Rime: I bought a Fate painting of a hairy balled rat hanging on a rope.

1xRun: What was the last piece of art that you bought?
Rime: I usually trade for art or end up with stuff. I am not really a collector of many things. I like kitchen fridge magnets and used hotel key cards.

1xRun: Your Seventh Letter offshoot Letters First has done some pretty crazy stunts and thrown some killer parties, a few of which made it into Dangerous Joseph Shit, for the uninitiated give us the story behind the Letters First crew.
Rime: Letters First Crew is a bunch of serious motherfuckers committed to doing things in a big and progressive way. With my direction, the crew is constantly trying to find new ways to party hard and get into some out of the box antics. Word.
