Rudy Fig Presents Delusions of Loneliness

1xRUN Thru Interview
Delusions of Loneliness by Rudy Fig

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about the original piece, is it still for sale?
Rudy Fig:  The original is oil on Canvas.  The original is available at the Rogue Buddha Gallery. I also have a sketch as well as the original painting I Want What You’re On that are for sale here on 1xRUN.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Rudy Fig:  It is a piece from my third solo show “Galactic Garden Party.”   I was in between houses and super pregnant living in a crusty basement so it was sort of therapeutic to paint something colorful and whimsical.   The main idea is that the girl in the bathtub who thinks she’s alone is actually surrounded by animals, spirits and flowers.   Even her bathtub is alive.

1xRun: When did you first start making art?    What was your first piece?
Rudy Fig:   I’ve been making art since i was very young.   I don’t recall exactly what my first piece is,  but my first oil painting was an image of a dressed up cat eating a steak. My computer just crashed so unfortunately I’ve lost the picture!

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on?
Rudy Fig:  Some of my favorite artists when I was young were the artists I learned about through my art history books.  I love  the rococo and baroque periods in art both for historical context as well as the florid, over the top motifs.

1xRun: What artists inspire you now?
Rudy Fig:  I think my favorite at the moment is Chris Berens.  My all time favorites are Vigee Lebrun, Murakami, Henry Darger, Vermeer, Mucha and the other  Nouveau artists.   I am more inspired by life experiences and the world around me that other artists.  I like cosmic nebulae, Giant red wood trees, lace, big dogs, bruises, flowers, my kid and floaty magical things in the ocean.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what? If not then what is your environment like when you work?
Rudy Fig: I like to listen to audiobooks while I work, That way I can learn and paint at the same time… killing two birds with one stone…  Sometimes music happens too.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why?
Rudy Fig: I would love to collaborate with the Australian sugar sculpture duo Pip and Pop some day.  Look them up!

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any deceased artists who would it be and why?
Rudy Fig:  OOOOooo that’s a hard one …  Henry Darger maybe…and because he is mysterious and might have needed a friend.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it?
Rudy Fig:  I think the first art I purchased was a strange sculpture of a dolls head with fondue stick legs.  I still have it, it’s in my studio now.

1xRun: What was the last piece of art that you bought?
Rudy Fig:  I recently snagged a piece by Alex Kuno.

1xRun: What else do you have in the works?
Rudy Fig:  Lots of projects.  I’ll be doing some design work as and a fun storefront.  I’m also working on my next solo show as well as some large 3 dimensional pieces.
