Historic Downtown by Ryan Graeff

1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, when was it created and with what materials?
Ryan Graeff: These are the visual landmarks that define the beautiful grimey off beat Los Angeles that we all love. This piece was created in 2012, and was sold recently at C.A.V.E gallery during “Restitution Taco” show. I do have another original that is 6 x 4 ft. in that same series that is available here at 1xRUN.Photos by Jonas Lara1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Ryan Graeff:  This piece features the Los Angeles Historic downtown, including Broadway St. in the heart of the city, along with the Los Angeles Theater and the Los Angeles River. Also in this piece is a 1930’s Thomas guide. You can see some loose brush strokes combined with the details of photos to make for an expressive homage to the area where we are drawn to express ourselves.  With a grey concrete background the art comes alive with color to highlight the foreground of the Los Angeles theater marquee.Historicdowntown.grey.orginalweb1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Ryan Graeff:   This piece took about a year to create.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Ryan Graeff:  It has a harmonious combination of hand painted elements and hard graphic images.Graeff_Nov12'_060web1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Ryan Graeff:   Because art is an investment in the future for a better quality of life. Plus each of these is hand made in America.

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Ryan Graeff:  Grimey.1xRun_Restitution-Press_Historic-Downtown_22x17_Web011xRun: When did you first start creating art? What was your first piece?
Ryan Graeff:  I first started in 1997. The first piece I created was the Zines I made while working with friends from school.  The process of making a hand painted printed book, and the imagery that filled the pages lead to a exploration of techniques than in 2005 made my first few pieces in this formula.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? Who inspires you now?
Ryan Graeff:  Early on it was artists like Syd Mead, Robby Conal and The Clayton Brothers. Lately it has been artists like David Choe, PlanTrees  and Brandy Flower. mead1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work?
Ryan Graeff:    I listen to KXLU 88.9 fm local broadcasting during the week and Mix tapes from the Hit and Run Crew sound system.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art you bought? The last?
Ryan Graeff:  The first piece that I bought was a Cryptik framed print from a gallery show in 2011.  Yes, I still have it.  The last was a piece from art don’t sleep how by legendary Serch UTI RTH.

1xRun: What else do you have in the works?
Ryan Graeff:    Currently working on a new Route 66 series with photographer screen writer Corey Miller. It is part of some work that will be at my next show “Restitution 66” in August 2013 C.A.V.E gallery.restitution.66Also we have Taco Madness on Saturday 4/20!.
