Saif Chilmiran Makes His Debut With Trash

1xRUN Thru Interview
Waste / Garbage by Saif Chilmiran

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Saif Chilmiran:  Both pieces come from a series called “Trash”. “Garbage” the original is already sold however “Waste” is still available.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent  theme, series or show that you had?
Saif Chilmiran:  Yes, both are part of the series, “Trash”. It was currently on display at Courtyard Gallery as part of the “Pop Wall” exhibition. As a contemporary street art exhibition,“Garbage” corresponded to the gritty, do-it-yourself atmosphere of the collection.  I think it fit well along side the Dotmasters’ amazing stencils of trash bags, since both series portray trash in different ways.

1xRun: When was this piece created and with what materials?
Saif Chilmiran: “Garbage” and “Waste” were both produced in 2013. The originals are mixed media installation on canvas. I use various elements from my garbage with some metalwork and plenty of epoxy. The items used are the disposable aftermath of my other works, taken from empty spray paint canisters, paint brushes, markers, lighters and what happens to be occupying my work space at the day.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Saif Chilmiran:  It was in 2011 when I came up with the first part of the series and it came out of frustration when I was facing an empty white canvas. I was then dealing with my first gallery rejection yet I was going to display my first work a few weeks later in another gallery. so I wanted to do something different and unusual to come out of the norm, something unseen before to create a strong first impact, it ended up by literally coming out of the canvas. Part of the execution requires very basic engineering which I found challenging yet enjoyable.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Saif Chilmiran:  Each of the originals took between 5 to 8 weeks each.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Saif Chilmiran:  I don’t think you see many art pieces that are made up of an artist’s garbage. I’d like to say I was successfully able to convert a bunch of eyesores into an aesthetically pleasing reformation.

Saif Chilmiran: If they’re into something out of the ordinary and have a sense of humour about how I’m selling them garbage, I believe they’ll also appreciate the sense of organized chaos that I’m trying to evoke.

1xRun: Describe these pieces in one gut reaction word.
Saif Chilmiran:  Bouquet.

1xRun: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
Saif Chilmiran:  I always used to doodle on the house’s walls when I was very young, but I believe my first piece was a graffiti tag of my name I did when I was 14 or 15 and that’s all it took to ignite it all.  The first piece I did on a wall was a tag of my graffiti name “Safe” but the first piece I did on canvas was in 6th grade and it was some weird robotic structure.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? How about now?
Saif Chilmiran: Early on I was inspired by artists from a variety of different backgrounds, Banksy, CanTwo, Bernard Buffet, Salvador Dali and of course my mother. My mother used to paint when I was young and that always inspired me.  I’m still inspired by the artists I mentioned above, but as I grew older I started to establish foundations for my arts and I feel I’m more influenced by contemporary artists such as Koons, Hirst, Murakami to name a few.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what?
Saif Chilmiran:  I do most of the times, and the genre depends on the mood, I enjoy the 90’s grunge music, I like instrumentals a lot, bands like Pelican, Explosions in the Sky, or sometimes I enjoy the dead silence. I have my mother’s piano in the studio so I play it sometimes when I’m frustrated or need a break.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why? Any deceased artists?
Saif Chilmiran:  Either Jeff Koons for his techniques behind his near perfect 3 dimensional installation or Banksy, I feel that there’s a lot of thought and study put into each of his pieces before the execution and that’s why every time Banksy creates an artwork it creates a strong shock on the art scene, and there’s a lot for me to learn from a person like that.  For the latter, there’s so many, Roy Lichtenstein for his colourful – pop style that I admire very much or Dali for his surrealism.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it? The last?
Saif Chilmiran:  The first art piece I bought was from a girl I liked in my art class, this was 8th or 9th grade, I lost it when I moved to Dubai for university.  I haven’t bought anything recently, the last art work I bought was a small Kaws’s Companion vinyl figure from a friend. I’ve had my eyes on a D*Face print for a while which I’m thinking of going after.

1xRun: Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Saif Chilmiran: My next show is going to be a solo show in Tokyo, Japan in early 2015. Will have more details for that shortly.

1xRun: Where else can people find you?
