Saner Returns With El Encuentro

1xRun Thru Interview
El Encuentro by Saner

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece; is the original still for sale? If so can we offer it? If not do you have any other originals, sketches, studies etc. that we could offer?
Saner: This piece was born as a sketch of the mural in Fleury, France. When I was invited to paint the mural, this was one of the ideas I proposed, because the topic that I was assigned to do was “The Conquest of Mexico”.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Saner: This idea came up as a tribute of all those artists that have inspired me, including Gonzales Camarena and Frida Kahlo. My reference to make this sketch was “Las dos Fridas” taking this as a connection of what happened to us, such as Mexican people, during the Conquest. Finally, this violent encounter is part of what we are, as a complex culture. We are the mix of two worlds.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Saner: The concept was the hardest part, it took me a couple of days just to know what I wanted to represent with “The Conquest”. I was thinking about something meaningful, something that could contribute to all the heritage of those great artists who did something to represent this topic. It took me a few days to make this print special.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece and why should people buy this print?
Saner: What is unique about this piece is the tribute to Frida Khalo, along with the theme of “The Conquest”.  Overall I am very happy with the result. I feel people should buy this print because all of us we have battles that we cross every day on our paths. That is the true meeting; in addition to the conquest of the modern times.

1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Saner: A poetic encounter.

1xRun: 2013 was a big year for you with traveling around the world and working on highly visible mural projects, can you tell us about some of the places you’ve been and describe those experiences?
Saner: Lima, Peru was a great experience. I found that city very similar to Mexico, with a lot of traditions and rituals. Fleury, France instead, it was a city which allowed me to do one of my best murals “The Conquest”. Another great city was Detroit. I think is a beautiful city that has suffered from decades of neglect and economic stagnation, is being reborn through the act of creativity and the arts. These were some of the places I liked the most.

1xRun: It seems that the storylines in your work are continually developing, can you give us a bit of insight to the stories that you are telling with your work?
Saner: Honestly, I think I go with the flow. Even though, when I have to choose a “topic”, certainly, the idea of having a balance in my life is a priority. Is an everyday thought. Just picture your life… waking up every day, turning on the TV or reading a newspaper and the first thing you see is that some states of Mexico are living “small wars”, villagers defending their own lands and creating self-defense groups, or the people you love, is suffering because the discomfort and stress of the increasing of taxes, robberies to family and friends. It is seems that we are in a world that is falling apart. The only thing to do is searching for something different: being aware of the circumstances and try to change something. Trying to make people aware of all this problems, is something that is in my mind me every day.

1xRun: Your recent show at Fifty24MX was a huge success with a nearly sold out show at opening night – how does it feel to settle back down at home to work on a collection without all the travel?
Saner: “El Cenit del venado” was a challenge because It was hard to put myself in the studio and try to explore what I wanted to do and how to do so. It was difficult at the same time as I had to postpone other projects abroad. But every time I finished a piece of work, some kind of peace came to me. Also, when I saw the reaction of the people was very comforting. People could reflect themselves in moments of glory, moments that we all should enjoy every time we have the opportunity to do so. Simply, enjoy life and the great pleasures that come with it. All of this came after the death of some members of my family and friends during the last years. The emotional healing that we have to deal with, after those difficult moments in our life, and live every day, trying to reach our goals, without questioning about the process we should been through to make it possible.

1xRun: As 2014 is getting underway, what other plans do you have coming up?
Saner:
I have a lot of projects abroad this year. I am going to make murals, principally. Also, some collaborations with music bands are coming.
