Kansas City Artist Donald “Scribe” Ross Debuts Wandered Off The Path Of The Resound Fields

1xRun Thru Interview
Wandered Off The Path Of The Resound Fields by Scribe

1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, what materials were used?
Scribe: This piece contains my signature character Rumpus who is sort of a self portrait. It was finished in January of 2013, and was made using acrylics and spray paint on wood panel.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Scribe: This painting is a part of a larger group of work, murals and toys all related to the Resounds Fields. The Resounds Fields is a large place on a floating island of my characters that looks a lot like the Flint Hills in Kansas with tall wild grass.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Scribe: About a month or so. I do a lot of different things including Art Direction at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Between my job and family stuff it can be really hard to paint the way I wish I could.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Scribe:  I’m making my best effort to do more intense work with the time I have. Having Rumpus wander off the path is similar to my recent and upcoming artistic explorations.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Scribe:  I think my answer to the previous question sort of answers this one too. I’m hoping that people later pick up on the significance.

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Scribe: lost.

1xRun: When did you first start making art?  What was your first piece?
Scribe: I have drawn my whole life. When I lived overseas my Mom was really good at finding creative outlets for me even if it wasn’t art related. With little or no money, both my parents exposed me to a lot that inspired me to draw it.  As far as my first piece, I don’t really know. I know my first real wall I painted on was in this place my mentors had called “The Groove” and I will never forget that night.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on?  What artists inspire you now?
Scribe: Early on it was Disney, Berkley Breathed, Jim Davis, Vaughn and Mark Bodé, Most all the older cartoons from the 60’s and back…too many to really list. As for now, it is artists like Os Gemeos, Barry McGee “Twist”, Tony Curanaj “Sub”, East, Jason Brunson and his dad Dana, all the people I listed as my early influences and all my different crew mates from ATT, DF and AOS Crews.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what?
Scribe: I mainly listen to Jazz, positive Hip Hop and music from some of my DJ friends. Lyrics distract me some times so I prefer instrumentals more than anything.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why? Any deceased artists?
Scribe: I would like to paint a wall with Greg Simkins “craola” and my crew mate “Sub”.   For the latter, I met him but didn’t get to know him, but I would love to have been able to paint a wall with NACE.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it?
Scribe: I’m not sure what the first was, the last was a a print “The Collector” by Josh Keys.

Josh Keyes The Collector1xRun: How has 2013 been shaking out so far for you?
Scribe: Pretty good. It I think is a year of transition for both mine and my wife’s work. I am trying to slow down a little and pick better projects. Trying to do so many different things is having a negative effect on my work and I am trying to learn the art of making more solid choices.

1xRun: Any big plans for the rest of the year?
Scribe: I have some different small projects in the works but no big plans for shows or travel. I am really trying to get back to a solid newer body of work. I’m lucky I have the chances coming to me to do different things but like I said before, I am trying to figure out what my real focus should be rather than spitting out too much. I got to make sure I find that balance between my career and family.
