Skewville Returns With Get Up, Get Down

1xRun Thru Interview
Get Up, Get Down by Skewville

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent  theme, series or show that you had?
Ad Deville:  Kinda. I did a mural a while back for the Wellington Court Mural project in Queens, New York City.  Being born and raised in Queens I wanted to paint something that was quintessential to my upbringing there…Breakdancing!

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about these pieces?
Ad Deville:
Some of my work reflects the fact that I am a twin, with concepts and characters that are double sided. When i originally made this headspinning character, I wanted to show that duality, so by simply flipping the image it was now doing a knee spin or some floor work. The Idea of doing 2 prints came by obsessively not being able to decide which position was better.1xRUN_Skewville_Get-Down_16x20_blogrev5  1xRUN: What materials were used for these prints ?
Ad Deville:
Silkscreen print on Tar Paper…of course!

1xRun: Describe the print in one gut reaction word.
Ad Deville:
1984. 1xRUN_Skewville_Get-Down_16x20_blogrev6

1xRun: Give us a little history on the name Skewville, how did the moniker come about and when did you start using it?
Ad Deville:
Back in 1996 Me and my twin brother, Droo moved into a crooked house in Queens we called “Skewville”. When friends visited they said that they were going to “Skewville”.  Whatever we created in that house was labeled ” Made in Skewville”. It became the name of our Business together “Skewville headquarters”.

skewvilleold2Over the years the name became synonymous with our design style, use of font, and overall way of life, that it eventually consumed our identities to where we are now known as Skewville, long after the original structure was destroyed.

1xRun: You’re born and raised in New York City , during your lifetime tell us a bit how you have seen the boroughs change and what they transformed into?
Ad Deville:
The hype of New York City for some reason resonates around Brooklyn, The reality is 99% of the people i know in BK are not from there, including myself.  Being born and raised in Queens, I have a lot of borough pride, My beef is QNS gets no respect on a global scale. When traveling, foreigners would ask where I’m from and when I said Queens, they would look blank, then I would tell them its next to Brooklyn. Their eyes would light up “oh Brooklyn! yeah!”.  My brother still lives in Queens and he thinks I’m a sell out for repping  BKLYN in my artwork. The truth is that when I lived in Queens and Manhattan I also did the same thing, but nobody gave a shit.

As far as what NYC has transformed into…NO comment.
