Tom Bagshaw Paints A Lullaby In Latest Edition

1xRUN Thru Interview
Lullaby by Tom Bagshaw

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, Was this piece part of a recent  theme, series or show ?
Tom Bagshaw: ‘Milk’ was the theme of the show that Kaspian Shore came up with for the Prisma show at Fine Grime gallery here in Bath, UK in November 2012. I decided on a suitably weird take on the theme, breast feeding a demon baby may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it was certainly different!

1xRun: When was this piece created and with what materials?
Tom Bagshaw: This was digitally painted in October 2012 with Corel Painter, Artrage and Photoshop (like pretty much everything I do in fact), then printed on cotton rag stock, mounted on board, hand-embellished with acrylic before being varnished and framed.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Tom Bagshaw: After getting the show theme I scribbled down a few notes about the vaguest stuff I could think of and then the general idea popped into my head, it was then just a case of doing some rough thumbnails to establish a proper composition but more importantly, the colour theme – before moving on to paint at higher resolution.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Tom Bagshaw: Roughly 4 days I think.

1xRun: Any difficulties that came about while creating this? If so, how did you get through them, if not, why did it go so smoothly?
Tom Bagshaw: The main thing I wanted to to convey was the motherly aspect but it was the colour that was a little tricky, I ended up going with warmer colours than usual which helped to give a more ‘creamy’ appearance – almost warming the piece up to give a feeling of being ‘off’ somehow.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Tom Bagshaw: It’s probably going to be the only breastfeeding piece I will do!

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Tom Bagshaw: Demons need love too.

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Tom Bagshaw: “Unsettling” maybe?

1xRUN-Tom-Bagshaw-Lullaby-13x16-BLOGr1xRun: You have captured countless feminine beauties with your paintings each one with a different model, tell us a bit about this model?
Tom Bagshaw: Like the majority of the women I paint she is more of an amalgam of different models, but she is very much inspired classical portraiture.

1xRun: When you are looking through models or different photos of the same model, what aspect do you look for to incorporate into your work?
Tom Bagshaw: Usually it’s the eyes that I look at first.

1xRun: What have you been up to since your last RUN with us as 2013 is winding down?
Tom Bagshaw: Ive been working away on some commissions and spending the later part of the year doing quite a few pieces for group shows in the U.S and Europe. I’m really looking forward to February next year when I can take a bit of time to finish my portrait project!

1xRun: Any big plans for 2014 that you’d like to share?
Tom Bagshaw: As I said, I should finally get the chance to finish the portrait series I began earlier this year featuring models who volunteered on Instagram. I got about half way through and then had to stop as my schedule got full with show works. As soon as I’ve got the other pieces done they will all be available online through my own store, I wanted to keep the prices as low as possible to open my work up to collectors who may not be able to buy through galleries and with any luck I will also be putting out a catalogue / book of this body of work so those who miss out on the one off pieces will still be able to own a smaller print!
