1xRun Thru Interview
Tall Tales by Yis Goodwin aka NoseGo
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece…
NoseGo: ‘Tall Tales’ is based on ideas of folklore and story telling between generations. It is a new work created after a couple of awesome weeks of traveling.
1xRUN: When was this piece created and with what materials?
NoseGo: This piece took about 35 hours over the course of a week in mid May. It was created using acrylic and aerosol.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
NoseGo: It started with thoughts of folklore then to the idea of stories traveling through time and space. Later I decided I wanted to create a character who would be responsible for moving the tales along.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
NoseGo: The elements that are combined to create this character are much different than those within my other recent works. It certainly helped that a lot of incredible events were occurring at the same time – I think my excitement for what is to come also shows within this piece.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
NoseGo: As a reminder to create their own stories that will carry on.
1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
NoseGo: Wild.
1xRun: What’s the story behind the name NoseGo?
NoseGo: When I was younger I was into the art of graffiti and went by Nose. I later decided to incorporate something that felt more personal, so I took the first two letters of my last name Goodwin, therefore giving me the name Nosego. I also find my work energetic so the word go further fit.
1xRun: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
NoseGo: In middle school when my mother enrolled me in a few art classes. I think the first was definitely my take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That drawing hopefully is still somewhere at my parents house!
1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? How about now?
NoseGo: Early on it was Kevin Eastman. Now it is a variety of artists include Mr.Penfold, Craola, Dabs and Myla, Aj Fosik, Aryz, Jeff Soto, and many more!
1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what? If not then what is your environment like when you work?
NoseGo: Definitely! Lately I’ve been blasting Kendrick Lamar’s m.A.A.d city.
1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why? Any deceased artists?
NoseGo: Probably Aj Fosik, I’m not sure what that would look like, maybe some kind of sculpture relief/painting. I know it would be fun and look dope! As for the latter, that would probably Dali. That would just be wild!
1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it? The last?
NoseGo: I have this older Michael Sieben print that I’ll be forever stoked on! The last would be a Jeff Soto wood print that I recently picked up.
1xRun: What have you been up to so far in 2013?
NoseGo: So far a good amount of wall painting and some truly incredibly fun shows with Thinkspace Gallery, and my first UK solo show with Unit-44 in Newcastle.
1xRun: Any big plans for the rest of the summer?
NoseGo: I’ll be doing a lot of prep for a duo show with Curiot at Thinkspace Gallery in December. Other than that a few group shows and plenty of mural painting.
