HRVB + The Weird Invade Detroit With Nychos!

1xRUN Thru Interview
Baseball Bat by HRVB

1xRun: Tell us a bit about this piece. What kind of materials did you use and when it was created?
HRVB:  This piece is another plushy cucumber. I created it some time around Easter 2013 using my brain, my right hand, my wacom and two bottles of club-mate. It’s a mixture of two paintings I did earlier this year. I combined the best parts of both for the batman print. I created some of them during the last years like the famous “fressenpolierer” and I really love to have a batmobile of that shape.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
HRVB:  I had been on a short trip to Bulgaria with my mate DXTR. A whole week full of painting and hanging around with a bunch of crazy bastards. When I was back in Berlin my head was brimming with ideas. For two days I sketched all these ideas out and one of them was this baseball bat and the guy in the car. Then I was looking for someone who really kicks ass. The first thought was Batman because of his funky car.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece compared with some of your other work?
HRVB:  I really love to work with  dozens of colors and colornuances, a lot of  shapes and fading light & shadow effects. At the same time I love pieces where I have to reduce everything, like doing screenprints. Working with only two colors and trying to avoid intensive usage of outlines which makes things more tricky. In the end there are a lot of flat colored areas that, as a whole look like a three dimensional character.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
HRVB:  Because your cat/dog or “catdog” will love you for it.

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
HRVB:  PAIN.

1xRun: When did you first start making art and what was your first piece?
HRVB:  Since I was a kid I have scribbled around. At the age of 15 I started painting graffiti but there was never a conscious decision behind what I was doing. Five years ago I asked myself what to do in this life. I realized that there was only one thing I ever did and want to do. At that point I started making art. My first piece was done in early 2008 when I painted a huge blue character in front of a club in Berlin.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on and who inspires you now?
HRVB: The first artists that inspired me were all the graffiti artists. Like JEFRY(Germany) or TOAST(Switzerland) to name some of the most important ones to me. There are a lot of great and inspiring artists that inspire me now. It is always a pleasure to see the work of my crew mates like TheWeird. Other artists that inspire me are John Currin, Aryz, Norbert Bisky, BOM K, Ray Caesar, Chet Zar or Mark Ryden.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work?
HRVB:  It depends on the environment. When I paint a wall outside I don’t listen to music because there are so many other sounds creating a specific soundtrack for every piece. The soundtrack I listened to Angel-Haze “Resevation ep” and Modeselektor “Monkeytown” while creating this Batman piece.

1xRun: Bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to so far in 2013?
HRVB:  I painted some nice walls.
