In “I’d Like to Meat You!” Nychos will showcase an entirely new body of work inspired by his love of anatomy, graffiti and Detroit’s Eastern Market, an area with a storied history as a hub for public murals, produce and freshly butchered meat, all things the painter has long been acquainted with in his native country of Austria.

“My dad and my grandpa were traditional Austrian hunters, so I think that is where some of my interest in anatomy comes from. Seeing a deer dissected for the first time was very inspiring for me. Seeing all the guts and intestines drop out, it was a bit crazy at first,” Nychos told Hypebeast while painting at the world’s premiere street art festival Pow Wow Hawaii earlier this year. “Using all of this anatomy I think have found something I can stick with and really go crazy on. It’s staying fresh for me because I am always finding new ways to do it.”

Compiling his anatomic knowledge with sliced cross sections, x-ray peek-ins and detailed dissections “I’d Like To Meat You!” will be a colorful exploration of new works on paper, canvas and wood highlighting Nychos’ skilled range across graffiti, illustration and street art. In 2012 Nychos made his first visit to Detroit and collaborated with Flying Fortress on a large mural titled “Jukebox Cowboys” in Eastern Market where a dissected Jukebox adorns the side of a building on Orleans Street.  It was an experience that stuck with Nychos, as one year later he has returned to Detroit to create his latest body of work influenced by the historic meatpacking and produce hub.

“I didn’t want to remain stagnant with my use of anatomy, so with my new work I wanted to slice everything up and play with the slaughterhouse feel a bit. Overall the show will play with the idea of humans and animals, along with how interact with the food chain. You don’t think twice about the steak you eat. You see it everyday, but don’t take notice of the muscles and bones that make up a cow when you eat a steak,” Nychos said while putting the finishing touches on the exhibition.

While staying in Detroit for more than a month finalizing his show, Nychos will be immersed in local culture, and specifically Eastern Market as he paints several murals throughout the neighborhood.  As June progresses his graffiti crew The WEIRD will be in Detroit for 2 weeks for a group exhibition at Inner State Gallery.  With 5 additional artists flying into town you can expect to see a changing landscape of new murals in Eastern Market.

Throughout 2013/14 Nychos is traveling with Austrian documentary filmmaker Christian Fischer to capture the journey of a rising artist in the international art scene.  The film — titled “From The Deepest Depth of the Burrow”, a play on his Rabbit Eye Movement concept — will follow Nychos as he travels throughout North America and Europe creating murals, graffiti and preparing for numerous gallery shows. The documentary will focus on Nychos meeting and collaborating with variety of artists throughout the world to gain insight into their favorite places and how they function in areas like New York, California, Detroit, Canada, Denmark, Italy and France.  View the trailer below and support the project at Nychos’ IndieGoGo.

In addition, Nychos will also join The WEIRD in the following week as Inner State Gallery welcomes the 10-person international art collective for a group exhibition. Opening June 29th, the show will also feature an artist lecture and Q&A, followed by a black book signing and artist’s reception from 6-10pm.

Founded in 2011, The Weird is an international crew of artists spread throughout Germany and Austria. Each member comes from a graffiti and illustration background however the goal remains to focus on high quality character design created in unique yet recognizable styles. In addition to murals, each member also works as gallery artists, graphic designers, illustrators and lecturers.

“There are so many pockets of interesting artists from around the world and working with Nychos we were introduced to The Weird and each member truly has a distinct style and flavor.  We are excited to introduce their work to new collectors and art fans and show off the unique style of The Weird,” Inner State Gallery co-founder Jesse Cory said.
