Fractured Seasons by Vans The Omega
1xRun: When was the piece created and what materials did you use?
Vans The Omega: This piece was created in March 2013 over the course of 4 days in total working round the clock. I used acrylic and spray paint with a brush and palette knife on a wooden panel.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Vans The Omega: The unplanned nature of the work, letting go with an overwhelming sense to create harmony and balance between shape, form and colour. No part of this work felt laborious and happened naturally like the seasonal changes. This work was a defining point in this particular style where in some ways it reached its peak before the next transformation occurs.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Vans The Omega: Each work is like a pinpoint in time, never to be replicated. Buying this piece is collecting a fragment of that creative time as it flows through the mind. This particular piece was a breakthrough as the merging of precision, balanced the relaxed nature of this painting.
1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Vans The Omega: Dissection.
1xRun: When did you first start making art and what was your first piece?
Vans The Omega: As a child in 1982 I was already taking art and letters seriously. As soon as I picked up a pen I never put it down. My first piece, if we’re talking Graffiti, was a Tune piece in 1990, but I had been making art since I could hold a pencil. I did a lot of elaborate drawings since the early 80’s and was tagging my neighborhood by 85-86.
1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? What artists inspire you now?
Vans The Omega: Early on I wouldn’t have a clue what there names were. I used to see words written on walls without understanding the name at all. A typical “WOW” “FRESH” or “FUNKY” along the train and tramlines got me hooked on letters. My Nanna, Sonia was an artist. I was around her a lot in my formative years and she really tried all mediums while my Grandpa was obsessed with sound, photography & trains. When I hit the age where I finally heard the word Graffiti and could understand what it was, guys like Kab 101, Duel, Merda, Paris, Peril, Jelous, Dvise, Dero, Jors, Masica, Disk, Rank and Kano were my biggest inspirations. As a kid I was pretty observant and always loved architecture and nature and I always draw a lot of inspiration from those things.
As far now, Anyone really pushing himself or herself in any artistic field gets me excited. It’s not always about the work but the passion or growth behind it. In saying this, my friends like Askew, Toast, Rime, Hitnes, Sofles and a countless amount of other people all inspire me with there output and skill set on the street. The people carving out something truthful in art from there life experience are my hero’s.
1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work?
Vans The Omega: Always depends on what I am painting. When it comes to walls, I love to hear the paint releasing from the nozzle as it helps me with accuracy. The environment gives me a lot of feedback so I enjoy the natural state of things while adding some of my own sounds here and there to break things up. If music is present, I will use it to help me flow and generate my line up and basic rhythm. Any music that will make me dance or draw some kind of emotional response is what I will bump into my ears.
1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why? Any deceased artists?
Vans The Omega: Aryz seriously blows my mind. Everything he does is brilliant on many levels. There are so many talented people out there that I admire. I have had many to opportunities to paint with people over the past 20 years, but he tops my list right now. For the latter I would choose Leonardo da Vinci because he was obviously an amazing artist and I would love to understand the knowledge implanted in his work.
1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it? The last?
Vans The Omega: A print called “Ancient Landform” by a local artist Scott. No idea about a surname, just knew it was for me at the time. The last, well, I actually bought the last 3 works at the same time, which were from Askew, Deus and Gary Sipla of my TMD familia.
