Enigma by Beau Stanton
1xRun: Tell us a bit about this piece, was it part of a recent show?
Beau Stanton: The original painting was created for the Shades show at Corey Helford Gallery in July. The theme of the show was to create a painting in a single or limited color palette so I crafted a new image in two versions, one in a red-orange range and another in blue-green.
1xRun: Is this piece part of a recent body of work or theme that you have been using?
Beau Stanton: This is the first piece I’ve made in this direction but I think I will continue to explore painting using a more limited use of color.
1xRUN: When was this piece created and with what materials?
Beau Stanton: The original was created in early July 2013 with oil and acrylic on wood. The prints were made in the past few weeks specifically for 1xRUN. Because the inks used are mostly transparent, the finished print takes on a kind of holographic look when the light reflects off of the copper and passes back through the ink layers. It’s difficult to capture this effect in photos, but the end result is really beautiful.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Beau Stanton: The image came to mind when I started thinking about ways to visually describe states of mind using iconic symbols.
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Beau Stanton: About a week.
1xRun: What is unique about these prints compared to your other work?
Beau Stanton: The image itself is unique in that it is derived from my first mono chromatic painting. Each print is also very unique because of the printing method which is achieved by hand pulling ink through four different screens layered together to create the final image. While still maintaining a high level of consistency, subtle deviations occur during this process so no two prints are exactly alike.
1xRun: Why should people buy one of these prints?
Beau Stanton: Aside from being one of my strongest images to date, the print was hand made by me in my studio using a four color screen printing process with a very particular attention to detail and consistency.
1xRun: Describe these prints in one gut reaction word.
Beau Stanton: Rad.
1xRun: What else have you been up to the past 2-3 months?
Beau Stanton: I wrapped up my last solo show at Last Rites Gallery, which came to a close last month. I also painted a new mural in Bushwick, and launched my new website at www.beaustanton.com. Since then I’ve just been planning for some upcoming projects in Europe and Art Basel Miami.
1xRun: What are some recent influences in your work that might not be as apparent at first glance?
Beau Stanton: I’ve been reading some Carl Jung lately as well as a few books on geometric archetypes of nature. They seem to have gotten the wheels turning.
1xRun: What do you have coming up in the next month or so?
Beau Stanton: I’ll be painting a couple of new murals in the NYC area this month before heading to Spain, Italy, Germany, and the UK for a few weeks to paint and scout for an exciting new project that will be happening sometime next Spring.
