Amazing Accounts by BASK
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is it part of a recent/upcoming show?
BASK: This painting titled Amazing Accounts is part of my upcoming show I’m doing with Derek Hess at Howl Gallery in Ft. Myers, Florida. The opening is October 3rd.
1xRUN: When was this piece created & with what materials?
BASK: I finished this piece last week. It was painted on a salvaged panel with Acrylic, Latex, spray paint on a fabricated box frame.
1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
BASK: As with most of my work, everything on this piece is hand painted. No stencils or silk screening was used.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about? How long did this piece take?
BASK: In the past month, I’ve been really into doing figurative portrait style works in a halftone style. I find painting all those dots is like meditation for me. Not to mention, I really love the look of an image painted on halftones. I’ve been plotting this piece in my head for over a year now and finally the moment was right to bring it to life. The painting with framing took a couple of days to complete.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
BASK: If anything it’s the style in which it done in. I’ve rarely painted images in halftones and now a lot of my current work had some halftone element in it. The other unique event to this piece is the dramatic texture of the panel it’s painted on. It has old staples in it on top of the thick layered drippy base.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
BASK: hopefully because they find it attractive on a few levels. From the image of the girl, who is an old friend of mine, to the verbiage at the bottom. It taps into the story of each person and the stories and adventures that person has had.
1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
BASK: Sexy.
1xRun: You have an upcoming two person show with Derek Hess, what can fans expect?
BASK: One hell of a show. Derek’s work is so intense and amazing. We’ve shown together a few times over the past decade and each show is always better then the last.
1xRun: How did you and Derek Hess start working together?
BASK: Derek and I were both showing at CPOP in Detroit but we became friends and shown more regularly together at gallery 1300 in his home town, Cleveland Oh. Marty Gerimita was the catalyst that brought us together.
1xRun: Have you two collaborated on any pieces or has it been each of you working separately?
BASK: In this show, we are both doing our own thing and just sharing the room at Howl Gallery.
1xRun: What are some of your favorite aspects of Derek’s work?
BASK: The energy of his work. There is so much intensity and heart and honesty behind every piece he makes. I was a fan of his since the mid 90’s and it has been a real honor to not only do shows with him but to be able to call him a friend.
1xRun: Aside from working on the upcoming show what have you been up to?
BASK: I’m have a few mural projects planned for October here in Florida as well as a collaboration with 5 star chef, Chris Ponte for an event at the St. Petersburg Museum of Art. I’m also invoked with a number of group shows and in November, I’m going to start getting ready to do something big for Art Basel Miami.
