The Hiker by Scott Musgrove
1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, was it part of a recent theme, series or show that you have?
Scott Musgrove: This painting was in my 2012 show at the Dorothy Circus Gallery in Rome, Italy. It is part of a long series of paintings (“The Late Fauna of Early North America”) that began with depicting extinct species (that may never have actually existed). The series has had a few offshoots that vaguely reference parasites and climate change. This painting touches on the subject of the displacement of species as a result of climate change. I try not to be too heavy-handed about it though. My hope is that people will enjoy the image first and then perhaps either discover the message or invent their own message while viewing it.
1xRUN: When was this piece created and with what materials?
Scott Musgrove: This piece was created over the course of a couple of weeks, more or less, in 2012 using oil on board.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Scott Musgrove: If they don’t, all of the animals will die.
1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Scott Musgrove: What?
1xRun: When did you first start making art?
Scott Musgrove: I first started drawing with any real focus in high school, but didn’t get any real art training until college.
1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? What artists inspire you now?
Scott Musgrove: Early on it was mostly Hudson River School paintings like Church, Bierstadt, Moran, etc. Plus many of the Early Renaissance painters. As for right now, Joe Sorren inspires me a lot because the way he works is completely opposite of the way I work. I plan my paintings out in quite a bit of detail before I begin painting. But Joe just starts smearing paint around and slowly these beautiful ideas and paintings start to take shape. That sounds like a good time.
1xRun: If you could collaborate with any deceased artists who would it be and why?
Scott Musgrove: I’d ask Jan Van Eyck to make finished paintings out of my sketches. I’d sit behind him and watch him paint while he babbled on unintelligibly in Flemish.
1xRun: Any big plans coming up in the next month or two that you want to share? Shows, events etc.
Scott Musgrove: My next gallery show isn’t until 2014 in New York, but in the meantime I’ll be continuing with an edition of small bronze sculptures that can be found on my website here.
