Gustavo Rimada Debuts With Cruz de Cristo

1xRun Thru Interview
Cruz de Cristo by Gustavo Rimada

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Gustavo Rimada:
This piece is actually 2 parts, the cross is cut out of a wood board and the background is a wood board . The cross is placed on a spacer to give it a 3d effect. The original is for sale, but not until my show January 11th, 2014 at CAVE Gallery in Venice Beach, California.  The theme of my show is anatomy, so in this piece I displayed a anatomical heart in a sacred fashion.

1xRun: When was this piece created and with what materials?
Gustavo Rimada:
This painting was created earlier in the year around March. I had such a great time with it. I used acrylic on canvas mainly, although sometimes I paint on wood boards.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Gustavo Rimada: W
ell I really love catholic imagery, it inspires a lot of my work and this particular piece comes from that love for that art. I wanted to create something I wish I could see hanging in the Vatican.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Gustavo Rimada:
This piece was very time consuming I’d say it took a few weeks.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Gustavo Rimada:
I think the 3d effect captured in the print and rich colors make it unique.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Gustavo Rimada:
Because I put my heart and soul into it. Also everyone needs a cross in their house right?

1xRun: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
Gustavo Rimada:
Ever since I can remember but I finally took it serious around 2008. I can’t go too far back but in 8th grade I painted a huge cougar for this banner that was gifted to the Living Desert zoo in Palm Springs.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? How about now?
Gustavo Rimada:
Early on I was heavily into pin up art so the art of Olivia, Alberto Vargas and Gil Elvgren were my top choices for inspiration. As for now, I truly love the work of so many artists this list can be endless, but if I have to pick just 1 I really love the work of James Jean.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work?
Gustavo Rimada:
I do, I really dig Pandora and my stations are the White Stripes, Pink Floyd, The Roots, The Black Keys, some classical and Black Motorcycle Club.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why? Any deceased artists?
Gustavo Rimada:
Ah man too tough but I think I would really enjoy a collab with Shepard Fairey or Retna. For the latter, that’s easy, it would be Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it?
Gustavo Rimada:
I’ve been lucky enough to trade for some really rad art since I am also a working artist but I would love to own a few originals I bought there has to be a gratification knowing you purchased something amazing with your hard earned money and now you own it.

1xRun: Any other big news or shows coming up that you’d like to share?
Gustavo Rimada:
I have a solo show opening January 11th, 2014 at CAVE Gallery in Venice Beach, California.
