Does Debuts With We Built This City Gold Prints

1xRUN Thru Interview
We Built This City by Does

1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, what materials did you use?
Does: The original drawing was created with gold leaf, red and black ink on 280 GSM paper. I’ve always liked the idea of drawing a city based on my letters. I first did this last year in my drawing ‘Streets’ and this year I wanted to build on this. This was a commission piece, which I do enjoy doing, for more information on a commissioned work email [email protected]. There is also original work from Does available here.

1xRUN: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Does: The idea behind the drawing is that I’m building a city based on my letters. I incorporate elements from city life that appeal to me, such as suburbs, underground systems and business districts. The gold leaf in combination with the black ink is symbolic for the enormous difference between wealth and poverty that you see in many cities. All these elements are built around my letters D, O, E, S. As for the execution, it is a free style drawing from the very beginning.

1xRUN: When was this piece created and how long did it take?
Does: I did this piece back in July of 2013 and it took me 2 weeks to complete.

1xRUN: What is unique about these pieces?
Does: It is my own small scale city. There are new details and elements to discover every time you look at it. Each of the hand-embellished is uniquely gold leafed and hand-painted by me as well.

1xRUN: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
Does: I became aware of my interest in drawing when I was recovering from my first severe knee injury during my days as a professional soccer player. My first piece was a silver throw up.

1xRUN: What artists inspire you?
Does: Any energetic artists who push boundaries.

1xRUN: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what?
Does: When I’m working on a canvas or drawing, I like to listen to the radio. When I’m working on a mural, I don’t listen to music as I want to be able to hear the spray can.

1xRUN: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why?
Does: At some point in the future I would like to do a collaboration with my brother who is a fine artist.

1xRUN: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it? The last?
Does: The first was a canvas of Sigi ‘Dare’ von Koeding. The last was one of my brother’s artworks.

1xRUN: Where else can people find you?
