Spirit of the Fox by Ana Bagayan
1xRun: Tell us a little about this piece, is the original for sale?
Ana Bagayan: It was created for the Born Free USA fundraiser show at Thinkspace gallery last year that helped benefit endangered species. The original painting was sold at the show, however, I did a few new sketches for 1xRUN collectors!
1xRUN: What materials was it created with?
Ana Bagayan: The original is oil and glitter on wood.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Ana Bagayan: It was one of those pieces that just built itself up from drawing to painting. I started sketching without any intentions and it turned into this.
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Ana Bagayan: A week or two.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Ana Bagayan: The fox has always been one of my spirit animals. I chose this particular animal because it looks like a fox, but I painted from a picture of an endangered Ethiopian wolf.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Ana Bagayan: For fun.
1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Ana Bagayan: Furry.
1xRun: You recently moved out into the mountains, do you want to talk about that and the effect / influence that it has had on your work?
Ana Bagayan: Sure. I moved up to the mountains a few months ago because our 13 year old German Shepherd was beginning to have trouble walking and our home in the city didn’t have a yard or grass for him to easily access. We had visited this mountain town a year ago and fell in love with it so when it was time to move, we knew this was the right place to go.
I’ve loved learning about the native plants and flowers and seeing wild animals roaming around town. Nature is mesmerizing. There are some things that I’d rather experience in person than paint. I began collecting samplings of plants so I could find out what they are and if they’re edible and eventually they ended up being used in my artwork. I like the idea of doing something constructive with the things I have collected.
1xRun: Your pieces have always focused heavily on the concept of UFOs and aliens, how did that come about or has it always been a passion of yours?
Ana Bagayan: Just in the last few years, after my husband introduced me to the subject. Together we have done hundreds of hours of research and have seen many UFO’s. It’s something that the whole planet has in common and there is a lot of incredible footage if you spend the time to look for it. Not only that, we are still uncovering the remains of ancient structures, strange humanoid bodies, and other anomalies as well as making strides in understanding our physical world through science. These are all pieces of a grand puzzle we are putting together.
1xRun: Have there been any new artists that have been inspiring you as of late?
Ana Bagayan: I guess you could say Nature has been inspiring me lately.
1xRun: Any shows or events coming up that you want to talk about?
Ana Bagayan: I will have my next solo show in May of 2014 at Thinkspace Gallery.
