Infinity Head & Crystalpecker by Sobekcis
1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about these two pieces for your debut RUN, we have Infinity Head and Crystalpecker.
Sobekcis: Both of these pieces fit in the aesthetic that we have been working on in the last year and for both, we chose the approach of working half by hand and then working out the geometrical elements and colors on the computer. With the Infinity Skull piece we wanted to work with a symmetrical piece as we have worked on before, and even though it wasn’t in the first idea it somehow started to look like a tarot card. So we finished the work in that direction.
For Crystalpecker, the idea was to use the same outline of the bird just flipped, and also in different color combination to create again this kind of symmetry like with the skull. They we were just breaking it up with the background so it wouldn’t be perfectly symmetrical.
1xRUN: What materials were used to create these pieces?
Sobekcis: Drawn with fine liners, scanned, and finishing details like color and background in the computer. They took us about an entire evening to finish.
1xRUN: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Sobekcis: It came about pretty much the same way we do most of our work. We speak about what we want to do then split the work up. One will do the illustration by hand and the other will fix everything up on the computer. I had the illustration for the skull already done. Whatever elements that I wasn’t happy with on the first version we just fixed it up by adding more color and adjusting some other elements. The birds we did in the middle of the night because I got the email that you guys needed the design asap and we wanted to crate something new and exclusive for the print series.
1xRUN: What is unique about this piece?
Sobekcis: I wouldn’t point out anything unique about the works. We mostly work on a few ideas all at once, trying different approaches for the same idea just polishing it out and seeing what works better in the right kind of context .
1xRUN: Why should people buy this print?
Sobekcis: The way we see it is we try to satisfy some main points of view: color, composition and the way it esthetically executed so that it can be objectified and accepted.
1xRUN: Describe these pieces in one gut reaction word.
Sobekcis: Psihodelic.
1xRUN: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
Sobekcis: I have no idea exactly. It wasn’t graffiti considering that we have been drawing since we were children. The first piece I did was in my last year of elementary school, but after a year or so had past was when we really stared to get in to it more and more.
1xRUN: What artists inspired you early on? What artists inspire you now?
Sobekcis: At the beginning we were both in to 3D styles like Daim Loomit. As for now, this changes from time to time, but currently the people I get most inspiration from are fine artists like Kaws, Cain Casser, Tanja Taborin and Basqiat. When it comes to graffiti, the styles I currently like are from Sonick, Conie, Form76, Pant, Dems, Omens, Vizie and Score.
1xRUN: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what?
Sobekcis: Of course! I’ve found it to be a common theme with me after speaking to others about it that when we start to work I don’t like silence. So I either listen to some music or call some one over. It’s all good as long as it’s not just silence.
1xRUN: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it?
Sobekcis: We never bought art, all the works we have we have traded with other artists. This is the first piece we traded with our friend Super Timor.
1xRun: What was the last piece of art that you bought?
Sobekcis: This is the last pieces we traded for which is a print by our friend Tanja Taborin.
