Helio Bray Debuts With Partina Girald

1xRUN Thru Interview
Partina Gerald by Helio Bray

1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Helio Bray: The original was a 63 x 45 inches on canvas, and it is already sold.

1xRUN: Was this piece part of a recent series or show that you had?
Helio Bray: Partina Girald was made for my ‘Shapes For All’ Exhibition last year which went from June 6th to July 2nd 2012. Partina Girald was a master piece at the time. After that I exhibited it in Berlin at the Stroke Urban Art Fair.

1xRUN: What materials where used to create this piece?
Helio Bray: For this piece I used a mix of materials such as spray cans, acrylics and waterborne glaze.

1xRUN: When was the piece created and how long did it take?
Helio Bray: I started to create Partina Girald at the middle of April 2012. It took me about a week to finish. It was a very simple piece to create because the idea I had in my mind was very explicit. In my point of view, this piece is an icon of simplicity and color.

1xRUN: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Helio Bray: The idea for this piece came to me when my wife and I were in Florence, Italy. I really liked Florence, there was something about the city that gave me this strange sense of deja vu. When I got back to Portugal I started the canvas. The concept for this piece was to mix different styles together. That’s why you can see so many different influences in this piece.

1xRUN: What is unique about this piece?
Helio Bray: All layers underneath  the construction that bring out the expression of Partina Girald. For me, it’s very intense when I focus for a few minutes on the face.

1xRUN: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
Helio Bray: I started making art about 15 years ago. I can’t believe all that time has already gone by. When I think back, my first piece was a “Bray” on a wall. As far as painting on canvas goes, I started that a few years ago. I did a piece on canvas for a good friend of mine which was called “Thunder.”

1xRUN: What artists inspired you early on?
Helio Bray: In the graffiti scene I can say Can 2 and Dondi. If we’re talking about fine art, I definitely appreciated Mr. Jackson Pollock and Mr. Salvador Dali. Can you imagine those two masters working together?

1xRUN: Do you listen to music while you work?
Helio Bray: I am a lover of electronic music. I love all kinds of music, but specially electronic. It is truly inspiring.

1xRUN: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why? Any deceased artists?
Helio Bray: I would collaborate with my own crew ‘Thunders.” We use to make great work together.  For the latter, of course it would be with Jason Pollock and Salvador Dali. That would be the greatest moment of my life.

1xRUN: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it? The last?
Helio Bray: My first piece was a canvas by H. Ander. Yes, I’ve still got it in my house now. The last was a big canvas piece by Pedro Castanheira called “Mar.”

1xRUN: Where else can people find you?
Helio Bray: WebsiteFacebook Instagram
