1xRun: Tell us a bit about this piece, is it part of a recent theme, series or show that you had?
Meggs: It is part on my ongoing exploration of duality, as is all my work really, but yes more specifically it’s another addition to my ongoing series that plays with a vertically split face and divided identity. I wanted to utilize the process of screen printing to enhance the idea of two merging faces, by using the ‘overprinting’ of the red to make the eyes work for both the woman’s and wolf’s faces. I’m stoked on the transparent gloss ‘skull’ layer, which is a really unique way to imply the extra dimension of human/animal existence, and is something that can only be appreciated up close and personal.
1xRun: When was this piece created and with what materials?
Meggs: This piece was created specifically created for this mural & screen print edition this January 2014. The woman and wolf’s face were drawn with pencil from a photographic reference, the comic elements are a combination of found comics and my own drawings – made into a cut and pasted collage form. The paint elements are hand sprayed and painted and then scanned in.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Meggs: The idea is part of a series of dual face ideas and designs I’ve been playing with recently and the execution came about by wanting to use the process of screen printing to influence how the final image comes together.
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Meggs: About a week on & off I’d say.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Meggs: It’s hand-printed, with overlaying inks and a spot gloss!
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Meggs: The beauty and tactile nature of hand-printing, ink layers and rag-paper can only be appreciated in person!
1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Meggs: Were-woman.
1xRun: You’ve been to Hawaii a few times for Pow Wow correct? What are you looking forward to?
Meggs: It’s my fourth year at Pow Wow so I’m looking forward to seeing all my friends out there and meeting new artists, having a good time, painting in paradise!
1xRun: Anybody you’d personally like to collaborate with if the opportunity presented itself?
Meggs: Looking forward to collaborating with Bask on a mural this year. I think our similar aesthetic will work well together. We are working on some ideas, we’re both into duality so it will most-likely represent this theme, but that’s all I can say for now.
1xRun: How did 2013 wrap up for you?
Meggs: 2013 was a crazy year for me with lots of cool projects happening but an equal amount of stress dealing with deadlines, exhibitions and relocating to a base here in the US. I feel it was all worth it and at the end of the year I was looking forward to getting closure on some things and a positive outlook to this new start for 2014.
1xRun: Aside from Pow Wow 2014, what are your plans for the new year?
Meggs: A show with you guys in September obviously and some exploration of Detroit! Several group shows with Thinkspace, Corey Helford & Spoke Art here in the US, some cool collaborative projects and commissions on the boil! This year I have a lot of ideas to put into fruition but I don’t wanna talk about it until there happening!
