1xRUN Thru Interview
Vertigo by Matt W. Moore
Matt W. Moore: Vertigo is a 3 color (greyscale) screen print directly on raw aluminum. The artwork is printed on aluminum, a process that creates lots of interesting opportunities for different lighting, reflections, and magic moments. Throughout the process of designing it I was always mindful of where the aluminum sections would shine through the art. It’s not just a flat art dropped onto a cool material, I really integrated the aluminum into the design, so there are lots of moments where the highlights of forms are made from the actual light in the environment instead of the ink color in the artwork.
1xRun: When was the piece created?
Matt W. Moore: I designed this artwork in early 2014.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Matt W. Moore: I was in Detroit at 1xRUN and Jesse and I were brainstorming some next level ideas for unique screen prints. I proposed aluminum, with the emphasis on really letting the metal shine through in some spaces of the artwork. He liked the idea and we ran with it. It turned out great!
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Matt W. Moore: It is a very detailed and precise vector illustration. I never notice the passing of time when I am having fun, but looking back at my calendar, the time from first sketches to final version was about a week.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Matt W. Moore: I would have to say the unique process of printing. The artwork has a fun ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ story to it. It is a portrayal of the idea of vertigo. Disorienting and confusing, hard to decipher, which way is up and down. The typography in the piece reads ‘Vertigo’ 4 different times, in all 4 directions, so it is possible for the art to hang in any way and reveal another cryptic typographic execution. I love the idea of rotating a print every week, month, or year and having a new narrative to decipher and appreciate.
1xRun: Describe this print in one gut reaction word.
Matt W. Moore: Vertigo.
1xRun: When did you first start making art?
Matt W. Moore: Forever.
1xRun: What artists inspired you early on?
Matt W. Moore: MC Escher, Picasso, Walt Disney.
1xRun: What artists inspire you now?
Matt W. Moore: Sol Lewitt, Frank Stella, Alex Trochut, Augustine Kofie, Victor Vasarely, Jurne, Roid, Horfee, Tim Clorius, Ken Sortais, Tomek, and the list goes on.
1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it?
Matt W. Moore: I have been trading art with friends for 20+ years. I only began to buy art at exhibitions and studio visits 5 years ago. Some early pieces I bought were from Jurne’s first solo show in SF, and from Roid’s ‘More Than Ever’ exhibition in London.
