– View Available Original Artwork From Askew Here – Askew: The way I create these works is in a loose circular way, each entity is a spontaneous drawing where the only ruling parameter is that it must eventually become a sphere like body. I painted two similar works in this style in the lead up to my Entropy show at Inner State Gallery in August last year. Previously I had done these Entity studies as individual compositions on smaller works but had this idea for many tiled onto one larger painting. So far these are the only paintings I’ve done like that.
1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had?
Askew: More or less the Entropy show was my discussion about creation. A lot of people have differing views about this but I find my peace in concepts that don’t have an absolute answer. I enjoy the idea of rogue subatomic particles that are re-appropriated to become new things, congealing and functioning as one defined thing for a period of time then dismantling, drifting and becoming new things. It’s quite profound.
Askew: This painting was created in August of 2013 using a mix of acrylic, spray paint and pastel on plexiglass.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Askew: I wanted to explore my loose and natural drawing and painting techniques but never felt happy with something that defied any strict compositional outcome. I wanted to create a guideline or one basic principal to adhere to but be as free as I wanted otherwise. I also like making marks with graffiti tools and mediums and allowing gravity, how the various mediums agree or disagree define the painting. It really gels with the type of ideas I enjoy reading about.
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Askew: This work was made over a weekend while I was painting a handful of other pieces for the same show so it’s hard to say specifically. Most of the marks are made very freely and fast, the longest part of the process is drying time.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Askew: As I mentioned earlier – at this stage there are only two paintings in this format currently in my catalogue.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Askew: I think it’s a very strong indication of where my thinking and process were at during the making of last years work.
1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Askew: Physics. 
1xRun: You recently headed out to Pow Wow Hawaii, was there anybody on there you wanted to collaborate with but didn’t get the chance?
Askew: Yep, this was actually my second year at Pow Wow Hawaii. It was good to see the people I bonded with last year and meet a few more. It’s a very unique event on the annual calendar. I’m sort of on a solitary journey at the moment with my art making. Graffiti wise there’s still plenty of people I haven’t and would love to link up with. That’s because graffiti has always been a way more social and experiential thing for me whereas fine art is more introspective.
1xRun: Did you have any plans for your wall out there or did just going to improvise it when you got there?
Askew: I had no real plans, was just excited to work with Zes and Reyes again. Two people I respect a lot and love what they do creatively in all the facets they work. 
1xRun: How did 2013 wrap up for you?
Askew: Very well, I felt a big sense of accomplishment last year – all my goals and more were achieved. I am very thankful to all the people out there that have enabled me to do this.
1xRun: You’ve been staying crazy busy per usual, bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to lately?
Askew: Shit, this years been a whirlwind already. January 1st I had nothing in my calendar, by the January 14 it was full until August. It’s a mind-blowing thing. I’m spending less and less time at home these days which is good I guess but has it’s downsides too. I’m hoping the demand for my work will reach that tipping point where I can define some of the terms a bit more and work a bit more from New Zealand, that’s the eventual plan. Just so I can really do some very basic human things like marry my partner of nearly 12 years, get some financial security so I can look after my health and have some children and hopefully own our own home. All of those things have felt like distant goals but I see them becoming more obtainable the more I live this lifestyle of being half transient, living out of a bag and being able to produce work for shows in a new place all the time. I’ll ride the roller coaster for a little while longer and see where I end up!
1xRun: Aside from Pow Wow 2014, what are your plans for the new year?
Askew: Been and gone now, was time for family, friends and gardening.
